I have a sudden craving for homemade biscuits (no, I havent been drinking or using other mind altering substances). Problem is, I dont have a box of mix, but I do have flour, sugar, etc. So, ATOT, how do you usually make biscuits from scratch?

Ingredients: Self-rising flour, Crisco, buttermilk and biscuit pan.

Recipe: Fill a large bowl about half full of flour (measurements are not really needed). Make a well (hole) in the flour. In the well put about half a cup of Crisco start working the Crisco into the flour while adding buttermilk. Continue to add the buttermilk a little at a time and knead it into the flour using your hands as mixing tool. When the consistency of the dough is that of a thick wet paste, start kneading the dough until it becomes the consistency of SOFT play dough, then pinch sections off, roll into ball and place them in a pan. Place pan in oven preheated to 375 degrees and bake until they are golden brown.

Note: This recipe is from my wife. She has been making biscuits from scratch for over 30 years and they always come out perfect.

At first I looked at your profile and saw "Alabama", and was thinking HTF have you not heard of biscuits and gravy, then I saw country listed as UK. The UK thing explains it all...

While sausage makes pretty good gravy for biscuits the best is made with some Pennsilvania Dutch Dried Beef. Nothing like good chiped beef gravy.
