Birthday Present Etiquette? (golf clubs)

--Background:

Some friends of my play golf at local course. None of them are any good, since they are all just getting started. They play to have fun and work on their game at a casual pace. Everyone is right handed, I am left handed. The course they go to does not rent left handed clubs apparently. I asked everyone I know who play golf if I could borrow some clubs, no lefties though. I have been close to winning a few eBay auctions for clubs, however leftie clubs always get jacked up in price at the last minute. So, no golfing for me.

--Current:

I in my mid 20s, I recently had a birthday and got some presents and some cash from my family, normal stuff. My in-laws who live many states away got me golf clubs! My father in-law plays golf regularly and makes 6 figures so I presume they are some good clubs and not some Wal Mart junk. Here is the catch, I can not get the clubs until the middle of September when my wife and I drive 1000+ miles to visit the in laws. They do not want to ship the golf clubs.

At this point, I am bitter. I live in Maine and by the time I get the clubs, summer will be over. Also, daylight hours will be much shorter than they are now so I will not be able to go golfing after work which is what I want to do now. Then, after a few weeks, it will just snow anyway and all of the grass will die. I can not keep looking for clubs on eBay, since I now already "have" a set of clubs. This puts me completely out of the golf loop for a solid 2 month.

Should I be happy I got the clubs, or is this a good time to be bitter?

--Cliff notes:

-I want to play golf
-Left handed, so I can not find clubs
-In-laws buy me clubs from 1000 miles away, will not ship
-Can not get clubs until Septemeber
-How would you react to this

why dont you tell them you will pay to ship them over here if they are being so cheap w/their 6 figures that they won't ship them?

Exactly. Have them take them to a Mail Boxes Etc (or similar store) for packaging and shipment to you. Will be cheaper than driving to get them, and you can start enjoying them sooner.

Tell them that you would like if they shipped the clubs so that you can use them this season.
Every year I buy new clubs and have never once had an issue with them being shipped to me.

That would be too easy. I believe they are just using the shipping as an excuse. I know they _can_ ship the clubs, they mailed us a box that weight about 50 pounds not long ago.

Possibly this is some sort of in-law control thing over me, to make sure we visit them in September. Also, my wife gets really testy if I question anything her parents do.

First of all, I am right handed..

If I had chance to start golf all over again, I would play left handed. Correct Golf stroke is smooth and effortless. I am so used to playing baseball, football, etc.. that requires to swing as hard as possible, it's very difficult to control my swing..

hell yes to purbeast0's suggestion. you want them sticks, pay for those bad boys to be shipped down!

do it do it! then crack a 5-iron from 190 and STICK IT TIGHT

you should just be thankful you still get birthday presents from your family in your mid twenties

Offer to pay shipping, promise you'll still visit in September and you'll bring the clubs with you so you and your father-in-law can go golfing (weather permitting) then as well.

I'm guessing they want you guys to visit, and are using this as a good reason to get ya out there.

Get your wife to ask them to ship them (you can pay), because you're especially excited about them. I'm a lefty too ... and sometimes struggle to find exactly what I want to play. Regardless, get the sticks, get on the course and fire at pins all day long.

you buy new clubs EVERY YEAR? seems a waste.

1. Visit them in some weekend in July.
2. Thank for clubs. Spend day with them. Make everyone happy.
3. Bring clubs back.
4. ...
5. Profit!

trust me, you dont wanna golf left handed. i am lefty and do everything lefty, including golfing.

it sucks because you can never find a deal on golf clubs. i'm actually in the process of building a custom driver for myself because I was looking for new clubs, but they are just to expensive to go the commercial/brand name route for lefty's.

so now i'm leaning towards custom clubs.

Tell your wife to convince her parents that you need the clubs now so you can practice before you visit them. Tell her you want to play a few rounds with your father-in-law and don't want to be a total noob when you do, so you need them now to practice.

If that doesn't work, threaten not to visit them because you are going to have to spend the vacation money on new clubs, and your father-in-law can stuff the clubs he has up his ass.

No kidding! I went to 4 different golf stores and I could count on one hand the number of left handed putters I found.

🙁

Buying lefty SUCKS!
