i have a friend(female) who has been procrastinating on losing weight forever and she has a b-day coming up and id like to get her a CHEAP($30 or under) gift that would motivate her to hit the gym or do some kind of exercise. the only thing i know she does is something similar to p90x she also goes hiking sometimes. anyone have any ideas? i was thinking one of those hiking poles but it just seems cheesy.

That seems somewhat insensitive, nevermind rude if she were to unwrap your present in front of her other friends.

Admittedly I may be jumping the gun here as I don't know the dynamic between yourself and her . . . but in normal situations I don't think there's any way to get her something with that intent (harmless as it is) and for her not to get hurt/offended somewhat.

Just my $0.02.

Sorry, but I'm a frank kinda guy, and I think nothing short of saying "You're FAT!" than giving a small bikini. It's incentive to get in shape ;). Or, you can get her a full length mirror... :hmm:

Nalgene bottles and/or a small backpack. For the hiking and the outdoors. Or head to your local REI and pick up some maps or a book of the local hiking trails.

Wait, wait... I got it...

A set of small test weights with insults inscribed on them. She'll then be motivated to misplace them.

If you come up with an actual answer to this question that WORKS, you can patent it and make a fortune.

Until then, just go with the large box of chocolates and a card saying "I like you the way you are".

Spend more than $30 and get her a session or two with a personal trainer at a gym.

Does she have a Wii? Perhaps Wii Fit.

A portable music player so she can jog?

Here's a better gift, help her by offering to exercise with her.

To me, gifts are supposed to be something that the person would want to have (not what you want to give, please stop thinking about yourself when giving). If your friend is fat, it is because she doesn't want to do the things to get thin. Thus, she doesn't want your proposed gift.

Get her something she'd like for her birthday.

Then, on a separate day, have a talk with her and help her lose weight if you want. It might destroy your friendship though. Probably the best way to avoid that would be to take her hiking in exciting locations. But just don't confuse wanting to help someone with giving them a birthday gift.

$30 worth of chocolate.

Frankly, don't get her something to get her to lose weight. That is something she needs to do for herself. If she approaches you to help her, then by all means join her in jogging and excercising.
