Birthday gift for a 1-year old baby girl?

My good friends' daughter will be 1 year old this Sunday, and I'm going down to see them. I'd like to get something for her, but... I'm clueless . Should I get a toy? Or should I get something for the parents to take care of the girl? 2 conditions though. I'd like to keep it under $100, and I'd like to avoid gift certificates. I'm not big on GCs, but if y'all think that's the best thing, then I may go ahead and get it... Thanks.

Well, since most of the 1 year olds I buy for are nephews/nieces, I tend to buy the noisiest toy I can find. If you go into a Toys'R'Us type place and find the Fisher Price section, they will have plenty of stuff labeled by age range, as far as toys go. In all honesty, the kid will get the most fun out of the wrapping paper anyway, so don't fret the decision too much (and if you want your friend to remain a friend, you might want to stay away from the "noisiest toy" concept).

A $10 toy and the rest in Gift Certificates to Babies R Us or Target or Walmart or something....

You don't want to buy them 3 cases of diaper's but that's what they really need and will be thankful for. :)

Don't get her anything. When she grows up, she'll won't be able to remember that far back and therefore won't be able to hold it against you.

I was going to suggest that too.. maybe a college trust fund or something.

Or how about a little friend to play with when she turns 2 ;)

Very, very smart idea.

My grandad invested in utilities for me... apparently, I have quite a bit of stock in my name, now. :)

Smart investors are some of the best types of relatives to have.
