Bird possibly stuck in Chimeny

So it started on sunday. A loud banging coming from our fireplace. It's a brick fireplace with a metal flu/chimney; it's also bent so you can see from the bottom out the top. At night, I shined a flash light up it, and it starting cooing, so I know its a bird.

I've already tried the trick where you shine the flash light up with all other lights off and the door open (suppose to be attracted to the light and fly down and out the door). This bird makes a sporadic noise during the day after I get home from work - not too much though. The morning is when its really bad, 5:45am - 6:30am (when i leave the house). This must be driving my neighbors nuts.

My girlfriend is so fed up, she told me that we're going to just buy a log and either deter it from staying (if thats the case), or put it out of its misery (if it's stuck). Any other suggestions? Could it really be stuck or making a home?

Notes:
-Rental House, landlord non-existant
-Height of the house makes it impossible to see from the ground and we dont own a ladder
-Roof is so poorly made that I dont want to get on it (clay shingles that neighbors have brought to our front door saying "this fell into our backyard" - they weigh about 10 lbs a piece) - Think - show home from arrested development
-"Friendly animal removal" companies charge an arm and a leg

I have had that happen twice, I just opened the chute and the bird came down. Then the cat chased the farking thing all around the place until it found one of the many open windows. I was suprised the cat didn't leap out after it.

lol, sorry to disappoint Anubis.

The landlord *can* be reached, but they are a joke. They offer no help when there are problems. Example: We were moved in July 1st 2007, noticed it was damn hot (phoenix, 110 degrees+) - A/C didn't work. They tell us it will be fixed soon, (legally they have to fix it in 24 hours). After 3 days we cant take it anymore and check into a hotel. We end up living at a hotel for 2.5 weeks until they fix it (with a cat none the less). They argue that they shouldnt pay for the hotel room, and that we still owe them rent. I had to look through the AZ bill of tenant rights to prove that they had to compensate for both since they were being negligent. There are hundreds of companies that fix A/C overnight, but they wanted to go through their new insurance. It's not my fault they bought the cheapest insurance that takes them 3 weeks to fix A/C.

This is just 1 of the many problems, so I'd rather not talk to them about a bird in a chimney.

Tried this, maybe I'll try it again before I light a log.
