Bipolar Disorder

I know I could google this, but I was hoping for some people who have had experiences either with it or with someone with it. What exactly is it? What is it characterized by? General info on it and people who have it?

I ask these questions because as you may know, a friend of mine committed suicide. Anyway, I heard they think he may have been bipolar.

Thanks

Are you familiar with the term "manic depressive?"

Uhmm, not really. Episodes of terrible depression???

That and briefer episodes of euphoria. At your knowledge level I'd suggest doing basic research before asking for experience.

Yeah, googling stuff as we speak..

Wow, I'm pretty sure he had this. I noticed this ever so slightly with him - though nothing of it. Wow..

My Daughter, Sister-In-Law and Mother-In-Law are all afflicted with this. It is really sad. They are always either biting off more than they can chew (arranging to do EVERYTHING for EVERYBODY) or lamenting the fact that their life is so complicated (by the fact that they made all those arrangements when they were manic.). Then they become paralyzed with the inability to cope with the simplest efforts necessary to life. ie taking care of oneself.

Im glad a thread like this came up. Im 14 and I have bipolar disorder(manic depression).

This site is really good in explaining bipolar disorder. http://www.dbsalliance.org/info/bipolar.html

It effects about 4% of the population in the United States, nearly 1/4 actually get diagnosed.

The name bipolar really is self-explanatory. Bipolar refers to two poles. When someone has bipolar their poles go up and down. 1 being depression and the other being mania. The severity of the mania and depression depends from person to person. Some peoles moods go in a cycle. For a month they will be manic, then the next month they will be depressed. Some people are manic in the morning, then depressed at night. Some transition from mania to depression in a matter of minutes.

The most common form of bipolar is bp 1. A person will become manic, then depression will follow later.
Hypermania is an extreme state of mania. When a person enters this kind of mental state, it often feels like the world is too slow and you're are too fast. When im in this state, I will talk extremely fast, become angry very easily, sometimes yell or scream and then when its all over an extreme form of depression ensues.

It really is an awful disease but it can be treated with medication an therapy.

My girlfriend's mother has this.

It is absolutely awful disease, mainly because the majority of those who have it are not diagnosed or are in denial about it, which she is in.

I had this from my late teens all the way up to 40 years old. It disabled me for a time, then suddenly, it was just gone. I have not had any episodes of depression or mania in over 4 years. No explanation for it, but it's gone. I am taking no meds either.

Wow, thanks for the info.

A girl friend that I knew had it. She did good for awhile, as long as life was easy, stress free, and she was on her meds. The problem was, getting her to take the medication. A lot of them refuse to take it.

She had fits, bouts in the emergency room, they had to strap her down, calling me all hours of the night crying.

Last I heard from her, she wanted to stay with me a couple of days, before she went to Florida, I could tell she was having an episode, I felt bad for telling her no. An immediate red flag went up. I asked about her medication, "I don't need it she said." :frown: She left that night for Florida, never heard from her again. I sometimes wonder where she is, how she is doing.

Noobtastic I certainly hope you continue in your therapy, medication, and support. I work and have worked with several bi-polar people over the years. It can be very dibilitating -- I've counseled people first hand. More power to ya.

I hope more people will realize this is not a psychosis. It is a chemical imbalance that can wreck havoc with not only the person's life but others as well as TeeJay1952 so clearly shows us.
