Hello,

I'm sorry to register on these forums and come straight to begging for help, but I'm really stuck on this issue. One of the guys on my gaming team wanted to upgrade his computer, but he's not really tech savvy. I built him a new PC, basically, and he got the parts in. He knows what he's doing as long as nothing goes wrong. Anyway. He got everything installed:

Biostar TPower i45
C2D e8500
2gb ram
650W OCZ power supply
ati 4870
xfi
640gb sata WD drive
IDE DVD (has a sata one coming, but newegg shipped it separately for some reason).

I had him boot and go to bios. Temps are fine. It detects the HDD and DVD drive.

Once he exits bios (or if he doesn't start it at all), it goes to the Hardware Monitor screen and apparently "hangs" there (like in this pic: http://www.maximopc.org/images/articulos/604/Bios11.jpg ). No matter what he does, he can't get it to advance. It seems like it must be simple, but no amount of googling / foruming could find me the answer. I feel like I could fix it if I were there, but he lives in boston and I'm in LA haha.

I very much appreciate any help. Thanks!

Greg

Looks like he went into hardware monitor and didn't exit the bios. If everything looks goo then he should be able to restart teh system and have it boot off teh windows disk to install windows.

That's what I figured, but I like...triple checked with him. He hits F10 and saves/exits bios, and THEN this "hardware monitor" comes up. It's different than the hardware monitor in bios, which is strange. He can restart the computer, not entire bios at all, and this thing still comes up and freezes. There's no dialog or stated reason for it to go to this screen. I've had him put his bootable XP cd in and it still does nothing. I'm kind of at a loss =\

I asked him to try that, and he had to run out to the store, so I had him leave it up. When he gets back, if that doesn't fix it, I'm gonna have him start pulling parts. The xfi, all but one of the ram sticks, and maybe try his old video card just for the sake of it. Thanks for the tip

Looks like a bios settings gone wrong. :D I had this happen the other day while I was messing around with my quad + fsb oc'ing with the I45. This happens if A= FSB strap is set wrong or unstable B= 3 mem subtimings are set too agressively C=Not enough volts somewhere FSB/NB voltage. Tell your friend to google Biostar T-Power I45 Max OC or something along those lines. There are a bunch of infos out there, bios settings etc....Things you need to disable and proceed to ocin'g and tweaking.....Also tell your friend to read the manual and diagnose what is showing through the post led from the mb.

Okay, so leaving it did nothing. I had him yank everything non-essential. I had him go into bios and his voltages were low. I googled and found safe levels, and had him change those. His RAM volts were at 1.8, but his ram wants 2-2.1. He also upped the FSB/NB to recommended levels (ace-a-rule's post), and rebooted. Same thing. I asked about the LED error code, and he says it just shows CPU temperature. I assume you're talking about this thing: http://media.bestofmicro.com/,F-U-154794-3.jpg

I'm really confused now.

That post led does double duty on the mb. It shows error/post code and temps afterward. Get your friend to flash the bios to 626 from 710 and to clear nvram. This option is on the tab where you set the IRQ manually. Is your friend oc'ing? What brand of ram are you trying to use on this mb? Ask him to set the strap to 1333/333=the lowest ram frequency as this would give definite 1:1 ratio. Set ram timings manually to 5-5-5-15-6-42-4-4-4 (leave the rest of the sumbtimings) Also leave everything in auto and enable memtest. Check if there any ram errors.

Edit: Tell him to clear his cmos, it's below the ram slots and above the southbridge

he has 4 sticks.

So your friend has 4x1gb of ram? I thought only 2gb. If that's the case, scratch the ram timings I provided earlier and have him set manually to 5-5-5-15-6-54-5-5-5 (all other subtimings to default). Have him memtest the ram on test 5 for a good 1-2hours. Try NB voltage from 1.2v-1.35v.

Yeah I thought he had 2gb as well, but I guess he got two of them, oh well. So he got frustrated while I was at work today and disassembled the whole thing and rebuilt it. Now it magically works. Everything is golden, and the only problem he has is getting his x-fi to install. I seem to remember reading something in passing about problems with the i45 and the x-fi, any insight on that?

thanks for all the help....he probably just plugged something in wrong the first time LOL

/facepalm

Glad your friend finally fixed his setup issues. :) Things like that happens. About the audio, I'm not entirely sure. Did he disable the HDA Audio (onboard audio) under chipset/southbridge menu? I'm not fully aware of that issue with x-fi, although the mb has or used to have a problem with my x-plosion soundcard. The audio would stutter and then cut-off. The problem was the southbridge was getting hot and when I pulled the hs. They applied some thick tim in there. Identical to a clay :D hehehe...Change it to AS5 and problems went away..

I wouldn't be surprised if it was something as silly as he had the SATA data but not the power connector on or something. I have a Tpower board and that moment you describe during which your friend had the freeze is exactly when the HD kicks in and the OS starts booting.

Or something similar.

I had him disable the HDA in bios and now everything is golden. He's stoked, haha. Thanks for the pointers
