Am trying to salvage my old chassis (some box) and power supply (250W).

Got Biostar NF325-A7 socket 754 based board with a Sempron 3400+ for free (both brand new).

I installed the board and CPU in my old box and connected the 250W PSU (it only has a 20-pin connector which connects to JATXPWR1. No 4-pin connector to connect to JATXPWR2). Is this a problem? BEcause my board powers up and then immediately shuts down. Do I absolutely need to have that 4-pin connector?

If yes, then am I lacking with a 250W PSU? Do I absolutely have to beef it up to may be 450W to be able to run a Sempron 3400+?

Thanks in advance.

yes you do need the +12v connector for the motherboard.

Personally I wouldn't build a rig thses days with anything less than a decent 350 watter.

From your response it seems that 250W should be enough to run Sempron - although it would be good to have a 350W PSU.

I would really like to re-use the old PSU if possible. Is there an adapter of any kind which would convert say a HDD power connector to 4 pin 12 volt CPU power connector? This is not a gaming system that I am building - this is just for browsing/chat stuff. So marginal is good enough for me.

Thanks/

Ok!
Just to update, I got a 4 pin HDD power connector to 4-pin P-4 connector (square connector introduced by P4) - essentially to make my 20 pin 250W PSU an equivalent of 24-pin 250W PSU.

I think I have made all the connections correctly.

When I press the power button on my case, the system comes on for maybe 1 sec (light comes on, fan on the CPU starts rotating) and then immediately shuts down. What I want to figure out is what is exactly happening:

1) Is 250W PSU lacking enough power to boot Sempron 3400+?
2) Have I made some connections incorrectly? If yes, how can I figure this out?

Thanks in advance.

to answer your questions.

1) Yes a 250w is pretty lacking, especially if it's an older model, which it sounds like because of the lack of the +12v connector.

2)yes, the connector you are using rarely work as you are trying to connect a 5v connection to a connector that requires 12v.

once agian I will say that you should be using at least 350w (or a really good 300w) for a modern A64 setup.

Chuck your old 250w PSU to the shit house and get a decent PSU.

Newegg has a raidmax 420w for $20 with free shipping and $20 rebate. It's being listed on their mailing list, so sign up to receive similar offers. Not a great power supply, but better than any 250w.
