As some of you Biostar owners may know, the mobo loses the ability to control its onboard fans. When SmartFan worked, it was outstanding. After it apparently "got tired", I had a FanMate on the CPU fan, but felt it a little kludgy, so like any AT'er would do, looked at modding the case.
I guessed an NT-06 HSF and 80mm rear fan would fit, and was pleasantly surprised when they did. I removed the stock HSF, the rear 60mm fan, and had to enlarge that fan hole to accommodate the 80mm fan.
HSF Removed - with stock 60mm rear fan
80mm Fan Mod - High
80mm Fan Mod - Close Up
80mm Fan Mod - Rear
NT-06 Top
NT-06 Side
Going to build a NAS with this. The CPU (3.0 Northwood) idles in the low 30's (a good 10 degree improvement) and without a CPU fan, the 80mm is much quieter. Unfortunately, the PSU fan (tiny & thin 70mm) is a bit louder with the NT-06's heat, but overall, the SFF is quieter.
If you've got an old Shuttle/Biostar SFF around, you can breathe some life back into them.
