See the 2nd link in Spartacus' reply. The STEAM version is infected with Sony's SecuROM as well. Only way to avoid it (legally) is to buy the 360 version.

Well screw that then. Guess this is the second time I will "find" a game online while my own copy will sit there unused

why feel sorry for 2K..they are using a invasive copy protection on a game you bought to play..did they tell you that in the EULA?

If you bought and opened the game and desire to return unused becasue of this guess what your screwed

Did they explain all the crap it does to your system..I will bet other software issues and conflicts will show up with securom running around in the background affecting what you do without your permission or knowledge

This is IMHO like the someplacing a surevillance on you ....

Total BS....I really hope this only gets worse for them

They deserve all the sh*t they get in spades

I planned on buying this game as well but the SecuRom is rediculous. I remember complaints about Steam and HL2...and to be honest I still think their scheme sucks even though I bought the game anyway..but I trust it better than these fly by night (Sony yes...but still shoddy) companies that push their dangerous code onto systems. For bioshock if they don't remove that crap..I'll prob just buy the disk at a discount and "find" a "DRM free/removed" copy online. It sucks when the "unofficial" releases are more safe than the real ones. I found a securom installation on my machine last night..I couldn't even delete the folders...I'll have to boot into my other OS to remove them.

1. stop UAService7 service (CTRL+ALT+DEL, find it and kill it)
2. using e.g. Autoruns (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html) remove this service and delete the file \windows\system32\UAService7.exe
3. delete the folder Documents and Settings\<your_user_name>\Application Data\SecuROM
4. delete the folder Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SecuROM; in case of any deletion problems use DelInvFile tool
(http://www.purgeie.com/delinv.htm).
5. delete securom registry keys using regedit
6. key named HKLM\SOFTWARE\SecuROM\!CAUTION! NEVER DELETE OR CHANGE ANY KEY* contains embedded nulls and cannot be removed using regedit; use e.g. RegDelNull tool (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RegDelNull.html) instead of it."

I did purchase Bioshock through Steam. I checked with all those "unofficial" steps above and see no sign of SecuROM on my system. Is there any other ways to know for sure? I had no idea about this crap either.

EDIT: Nevermind, just found CURRENT_USER\Software\SecuROM... GG.

Were not discovered as undesirable by the PC community in general when their DRM nearly tore down the Sony meathouse and the Quicken TurboTax fiasco...
Who do these people think they are? Micro$oft??

Pure BS!

The official bioshock discussion thread:

Sony's SecuROM Discussion thread (the DRM used in both the STEAM and retail version of Bioshock):

Wow. Spartacus informs people about the problem and you say he's thread crapping.

But then you say Schadenfroh says to see his post and then you say "very appreciated suggestion".

How about you say you're sorry to Spartacus for being a d-bag? What he did was NOT thread crapping and you're being a suck up to the mod.

Spartacus - Thank you VERY much for the post. While this is not a hot deal, I will be buying the 360 version because of your post.

Good job.

Wow... you guys still use PCs to game? :)
Just get an Xbox 360 already. Sell that super duper OC PC and get a basic Dell/HP machine + Xbox 360.

Not trying to TC, kudos for OP for finding a good price on an awesome game!

That is not thread crapping, that would be the start of a thread hijacking.

I think the most ridiculous post was

'the graphics are subpar'

but I guess we can't all afford optical corrections

I also completely miss the hotness here, but hell of a pad post

Thanks for the warning on the copy protection.

I'm bummed though because this is one of those games that I justified my 8800 with.

I may buy the game anyway, but if I do it would be via steam... looks like a (only slightly) less incidious version of the SecuROM.

The textures are def lacking though. They seem to use really low res textures, since alot of them appear blurry.

Though I'm almost positive a high res texture pack will come out like it did for oblivion. Then the graphics will truly rock.

My good bud at work was really bummed about the xbox 360 version saying it was full of bugs.

(possible spoiler alert...but not really)
He was at one part of the game where he had to get a key out of a safe to advance to the next level, but the key was never there. He was so pissed that he finally gave up and decided to take the game back.

sounds like to me 2k really fubar'd both launches up!

so the 360 is not the solution to all man's ills.

I'm contacting the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau about 2k games' use of the securom 5-install bullshit.

*note* it only takes less than five minutes to fill out each form, and yes, it is insane, but it is the fastest way for 2k to know that this secuROM stuff is insane.

My college's help-desk slicked my hdd without telling me and took away one of my install chances. after I install it again.... that leaves three more installs,
wtf if I have a hdd crash, need the HD space, etc?

Join with me and contact them both.
Here is the info so it will take no time at all to complain:

https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01 <--- to file a complaint with the FTC

http://complaint.bbb.org/ <--- to file a complaint with the BBB

here is 2k Games's basic info that you will need

Product: Bioshock PC edition.
Address:
622 Broadway
New York, New York
10012

Tel: 646 723 4200

email: inquiries@2kgames.com

website: http://www.2kgames.com

And this is what I put as my complaint, and you can use it in your own form to make filing this complaint easy for you:

"2k Games' software title Bioshock (PC) has a special program added to it by SecuROM that only allows you to install the program five times. After that you have to purchase the game all over again. This is simply ridiculous. I involuntarily had my hard drive erased by a tech/help center at my college, since my motherboard was faulty, and the Bioshock (PC) program was the likely culprit or one of many. This took one of my chances of installing the software away. This means after I install it again, I will only have three chances. What if my hard-drive fails, or I run out of space and need to delete it or some other computer malfunction causes me to need to uninstall it. I really think that limiting the install times is bordering unfair practice from a company. It would be like buying a $50 dvd-movie and only allowed to watch it five times, when you legally own it. It's insane!"

If we get enough people to do it, maybe we can get something done about it....
