So bioshock looks like poop on my computer. Anything I can do besides buying new hardware to try and improve this?

What exactly looks bad? It may just be the game itself, which has extremely inconsistent graphics in general. The water and some other shader effects looks amazing while many textures and models have so little detail that they look like something from the Quake 3 era.

This may sound stupid, but have you played it for more than 20 seconds or so after loading? Due to the engine it uses, Bioshock looks like absolute shit when it first starts because it has to load in all the textures and stuff.

Yeah I have played it continuously for 30 min or so and it still looks bad. I will try to post some screenshots later to see if this is just normal or w/e.

I had problems with textures not loading at all on my x1800xt for some reason.

Switching to my newer 8800gt fixed it, but your problems dont sound that severe.

What settings are you using?

Post complete system specs, including driver revisions and ingame settings. Until we have that information, we're basically just spitting in the wind. That said, a lot of times these issues are caused by not having the most up-to-date drivers for your video card (also, check to make sure the latest DirectX is installed).

Bioshock doesn't look good on highest settings anyway, whatever hardware is being used won't change the graphics, the textures quality in that game is inherently low when compared to many other games even of the same engine, I mean UT3 on the highest settings does look much better than Bioshock and it runs quite faster too. I'm not saying that Bioshock looks like "poop" though, it's quite decent, but don't expect Crysis.

Not that it helps the exact problem but this game looked and played great on the 360. I don't regret paying the $60 for it at launch at all. I'm sure you could find it a lot cheaper nowadays if you have a 360. Good luck either way and hope you get to enjoy this great game.

Disable the post processing effects and stop the bloom / hdr lighting. It looks much better without it, IMO.

I'm going to go with this. Bioshock isn't in the same league as something like Crysis. The water looks awesome, and the art direction is pretty cool but as far as actually stunning visuals.. it's nothing incredible.

Download the latest drivers for your video card. If you have an Nvidia, it should make a big difference. The new drivers rock.

I think you're just focusing on the good aspects of the graphics (which are very good) and overlooking everything else. This is the sort of game that veers between spectacular and crap all the time, often just depending on which way you're looking in a room.

Yeah, specs or there's no way to really reply with any authority.
