Gamespot Bioshock Hardware Performance Guide

Interesting result i found :!

DirectX10 vs. DirectX9

Windows XP DX9 - GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB : 65
Windows Vista DX9 - GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB : 62
Windows Vista DX10 - GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB : 60
Windows XP DX9 - Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB : 68
Windows Vista DX9 - Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB : 45
Windows Vista DX10 - Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB : 43

interesting to see ATI Vista driver are causes for Bioshock performance issue

2048x1536, High Quality
GeForce 8800 GTX SLI : 81
Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB : 48
GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB : 44
XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB XXX : 38
GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB : 31
Radeon X1950 XTX 512MB : 28

8800GTX SLI has almost a %100 boost and 2900XT is doing great in high res.

Memory Performance Tests
1600x1200, High Quality
512MB Corsair XMS : 39
1GB Corsair XMS : 47
2GB Corsair XMS : 47

Not a memory hogging whore ;) good to see.

1024x768, High Quality
Radeon X1900 XT 256MB : 66
Radeon X1950 Pro 256MB : 53
Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB : 49
GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB : 44
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB : 40
GeForce 7900 GS 256MB : 38

Good to see you don't need the best card to play the game at smooth frame rate. $130 card will do fine so you don't need to upgrade.

Intel Core2 Extreme X6800 @ 2.93GHz : 65
Intel Core2 Duo E6600 @ 2.40GHz : 63
Intel Core2 Duo E6300 @ 1.86GHz : 63 (low end cheap dual core)
AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 @ 2.6GHz : 61
AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 @ 2.0 GHz : 61
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ @ 2.4 GHz : 44 (single core)

The game is dual core ready and works great on low end cpu.

ATi needs to get their Vista drivers fixed. For now, Ive got it installed twice via dual boot to XP and Vista. 23fps difference is huge.

I dont know why people always think this hype about multi core support will actually translate to real world game frames. Unless you're at a low res, it wont matter.

edit, and it would be nice to see a 7900GTX and X1950XT benched as well. I like seeing the current gens fastest, and the last gens fastest. Since more people still have last gens.

BioShock DirectX 10 vs DirectX 9 Performance and Image Quality

Do GameSpots and Firing Squads benchmarks line up?

Well Gamespot did a much better Bioshock performance review which wasn't the case a year ago where their benchmarking were medicore at best and firingsquad rained supreme in 2006. Now Firingsquad has gone lazy by aking short cuts by only doing benchmark for windows vista only.

I remember the day when Anandtech rained supreme by publishing excellent video reviews , those days are long gone. Computerbase and Beyond 3D have take Video review to the next level. Both website has excellent editors :)

I wasn't really questioning GameSpot's or FiringSquad's competancy, but ok. I was asking if their numbers are in line with each other in the benches they have in common.

Yes they are , give or take few FPS :! Gamespot did their benchmarking on non widescreen monitor.

Gamespot :

1600x1200, High Quality
Windows Vista DX9 - Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB : 45
Windows Vista DX10 - Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB : 43

firingsquad , 1600x1200 High Quality
Windows Vista DX9 - Radeon HD 2900 XT 1GB : 44.6
Windows Vista DX10 - Radeon HD 2900 XT 1GB : 44.3

No AA in DX10 makes my eyes bleed.

:(

It's my only gripe with this piece of art.

Unfortunately I bought the Xbox 360 copy instead of the PC copy. I couldnt find any benches using a 2900XT, DX10 and 1920x1200 on launch day. Fearing that my 2900XT would choke and make the game unenjoyable, I saved myself the potential heart break and bought the Xbox 360 copy.

No regrets :)

Impressive showing from the 2900XT!

My poor 7800GT really wasn't doing well at 1024x768 medium - playable sure, but not consistently smooth. Totally unplayable at native on my 24"

I need to get a 2900xt :)

You sir are crazy :! Fearing your 2900XT would choke :! 360 version sucks because of slow control and combat change. PC version destroys the 360 version. I can do loads of combo while your on your trying to your 1st combo with the D pad.

And you sound like every other PC gamer who fears what he does not understand. I've been playing shooters on consoles ever since I bought my Xbox 360. Gears of War, GRAW, GRAW2, RS:V, Bioshock, Halo 3 Beta, etc. I have become very accustomed to using the analog sticks and dare I say, can use them with the same precision as the KB+M most of the time.

i'm not sure what you mean by "combos". I can assure you that I can pull the left trigger and the right trigger (plasmid to weapon) just as fast as you can right click and left click.

There is no way a console controller has the same precision and speed as KB M.

Nope, and the inventory system is much better on the PC. If the precision was the same on a gamepad as on a kb+mouse, there wouldnt be an autoaim for console FPS's.

Challenges the Ultra? It "wins" most tests in DX9. DX10 is another story. Obviously a driver issues, that needs to be addressed fast. As in the next driver, or a hotfix.

The X1950 Pro does pretty well. Would like to see a 7900GTX vs. X1950XT though. Nobody tests these anymore? Ugh. They were the top less than a year ago.

I didn't want to state outright that it beats 8800Ultra since at 1600x1200 it actually trails in minimum frames at 39 vs. 44. The point is it performs extremely well in Bioshock with the new driver in DX9. Looking forward to Crysis battle.

I understand. The way you stated it though, sounds like the Ultra won most benches. Which it didnt.
