Bioshock crash

I have a fairly updated computer system:
Motherboard EVGA 750
Video card: EVGA 260 GTX
2 75 rpm raptors
4 gig memory but OS is XP

Played Bioshock with no problems until I was well into "Fishery" area. Suddenly, constant crashes to the desktop, loss of my keyboard settings, and problem seems to memory related. Have latest patch (1.1) installed at start of game. Is there a workaround? Or is there some kind of corruption in the game? earlier save games seem to work o.k.

Restarting from an older save gets you past that point? Or does it crash at the same spot everytime? Is this a new rig? It's stable in other games...etc.?

No. Crashes anytime now and loses keyboard settings any timethe game is played.. Saved games, any part in the game reacts the same...error message, crashes to the desktop and indicates a memory problem. Played Crysis and other games with no problem. Also, have downloaded the patch.

Let's start with the basics? Update graphics drivers, reinstall Bioshock, start new game. The fishery isn't far in at all, you won't have lost much.

A very good, and reasonable question, for I found that Crysis did not like my last overclock, but when I throttled back a bit the game played fine all the way through. I have the E8400 Wolfdale, stock is; 3ghz, sys. clock 333, sys. bus 1333, multi. 9
Currently 3.4 , 378, 1511, multi. 9
Vid driver release date 11 08, many have complained about the last two, a lot seem to like the drivers from April 09, me, I'm thinking if it works, don't fix it. The wife has played through S.t.a.l.k.er , Crysis , and Painkiller on this machine. IMHO, it is a glitch within the game. No love from 2KGames, and no joy at the Bioshock forums, others are having the same problem, with no resolution. Some have suggested deleting the last 3, or 4 saved games in the file, before proceeding, I have also read of an ini tweak, I'll keep trying.

Just taking a stab here, but if it's indicating a memory problem, maybe you should test your memory. Try memtest86+.

Hmm, it's been awhile since I played, but I didn't remember any crashes. I still have it installed on my win32 partition if you can tell me exactly where it crashes, i might do a speed run up to that point and see what happens.

So you think the OP has discovered a reproducible, game-busting bug that causes endless crashes once you reach a certain point? And it hasn't been patched?

For all users no, but maybe with certain configurations.

If other users on the official forums are having the same issue, then something is up that isn't isolated to just OP's machine.

Like you said, it's probably a memory issue, but if (s)he can play Crysis and the other games just fine, then yes, it's probably a game issue in combo with whatever memory setup (s)he has.

runzwithsizorz: The reason you lose all your keyboard settings is because Bioshock load's the default .ini files whenever a crash is detected.

Taken from Tweakguides:

Crash Resets: Each time you crash in Bioshock the game automatically loses all your altered settings and any customizations (including .ini changes) you've made. This happens because it replaces your Bioshock.ini and User.ini files - which hold your custom settings - with new ones based on the standard Default.ini and DefUser.ini files. You can however prevent this reset by going into the folder where your Bioshock.ini and User.ini are stored immediately after a crash (and before restarting BioShock), and deleting the new Running.ini file held there. This file informs BioShock that an incidence of the game was stopped improperly, and by deleting it you prevent the .ini file reset. To find out more about these files and where they're located, see the Advanced Tweaking section.
