Story

Following this morning's brouhaha regarding fake BioShock 2 details, actual information on the game is starting to come out as subscribers receive the latest Game Informer.

The sequel has players assuming control of "the first ever" Big Daddy, according to creative director Jordan Thomas. Players will be armed with a drill, and will also be able to upgrade their weapons and various plasmids.

As you liberate Little Sisters from other Big Daddies, you'll be able to either Harvest or Adopt them. Adoption apparently lets players escort a Little Sister around levels, fighting off splicers as the Little Sister harvests the all-powerful Adam from corpses.

The information surfaced over at the GameSpot Forums, and was backed up by blurry pictures of the article. The posters there and at NeoGAF also a provided wealth of other not-yet-verified details, apparently coming from the same source as the pictures.

Those unconfirmed details are listed below. Shacknews can confirm the validity of the above information, but can't yet say the same for any of the following points:

* The game is set 10 years after the first BioShock.
* There will be a multiplayer mode, but no details were given.
* The Big Sister is a grown-up Little Sister, and she's hunting you.
* Some levels take place on the sea floor outside of Rapture.
* The Big Sister will periodically pop up after you kill enough Big Daddies. Her arrival is apparently signaled by a Little Sister singing a song.
* The Big Sister is described as fast and "the hardest thing in the game." She'll utilize telekinesis to throw objects at you or use them as shields.
* Your drill overheats, and cannot be used constantly.
* As a Big Daddy, you'll be able to do that nifty shoulder bash move.
* Upgrade trees are now more diverse.
* The Incinerate plasmid allows you to throw a fireball or shoot a stream of fire, depending on upgrades.
* Using Incinerate on a Cyclone Trap will result in a flaming trap.
* You can now heal damaged turrets and bots.
* The game will reveal how Adam is recovered from Little Sisters.

The 2K Marin-developed shooter sequel is set to arrive between August 1 and October 31, 2009, and is "destined" for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The company has yet to state which versions will hit by October's end.

I hope they make a demo of it, I will need to make sure that the game doesn't end up in a glorified escort-focused campaign, because I must say that in most game genres I've played in my video gaming life the one type of game-play/goal I really don't like or very rarely like (I don't think it ever happened) are escort missions, whatever length they have.

If they find a way to mix free-form game-play (BioShock isn't exactly only linear, it can be played to some extent at the player's own pace without being deprived of enemies - and different ones at that due to the random nature of their spawning locations - to fire at during your exploration of Rapture until a certain point from which you cannot go back to anywhere else) with a minimum amount of those so called escort moments then I'll certainly give it a try (provided there's a demo).

I hope it has a wee bit more RPG elements and hopefully its story will be original (Bioshock's assets were original, it's story was ripped from System Shock 2).

To be honest, I have small hopes for the game... I enjoyed Bioshock greatly but I felt the game true potential wasn't really tapped in favor of pleasing more casual players, since Bioshock was so critically and commercially acclaimed I don't think they will change the approach of the game.

Wait... what? Did you even play System Shock 2? They got the game mechanics from the System Shock series (hacking, plasmids, cameras, etc) but the stories are different. System Shock 2 has you as a soldier on an experimental space ship fighting against a rogue AI that has infected the crew with alien life forms that she commands (or something to that ilk) while Bioshock has the character fighting a population of an underwater utopia that has driven itself mad due to a megalomaniacal ruler, a conman that is trying to wrest control of the city, and genetic enhancements.

@ Born2bwire, there's a one to one mapping between the characters in the story though. The difference in setting you refer to is really just a bunch of skins.

Hmm... 10 years after? But I thought we already trashed the entire place already?

I'm frankly hyped no matter what information comes out (within reason)... I enjoyed the first enough, and the devs have a good enough track record, that I really can't see Bioshock 2 being a 'bad' game.
Good to know it's scheduled for later this year, though :D.

For all the perceived flaws of Bioshock, it was really atmospheric and engaging. If they can capture that again, I'll play it no matter what nitpicking people might do over the details.

i see conflicts about gameplay in the article already

The sequel has players assuming control of "the first ever" Big Daddy
The game is set 10 years after the first BioShock

huh? how can it be the "the first ever" big daddy when there were tons of big daddies in bioshock????

I see no conflict, it just says you play as the first Big Daddy that was created, other Big Daddies were created, but 10 years later you are still the "first ever" Big Daddy, get it?

The Big Sister is probably the first Little Sister ever created as well and it's very likely there's a strong connection between you (first ever Big Daddy) and the Big Sister.

There's potential for a cool storyline, the source material is more than incredible, we just need creative writers, competent developers and mindful direction.

Ehh but I don't really feel there is a need for a sequel.

I hope the player's footsteps aren't so loud as the big daddy boots in the first game. That got annoying...

Meh...Bioshock's atmosphere was cool, but once it wore off about halfway through the game, you realized what an average FPS it was.

I used the wrench the entire game, and it was wildly effective. The only thing I couldn't beat down were Big Daddies, which is what I used my ammo on.

Yes, I even wrenched down the final boss. First try, too.

BioShock 2...rental at best.
