So i picked up Bioshock2 from Steam last week and started to play today. "Key needed to activate?" Ok, a quick google tells me its in the right-click menu in steam. Fine. I register. Then I go through the usual setup stuff, begin to play, and want to save. No good. I need to be logged into Windows Live? WTF? Ok, i login. Now it wants the fucking serial key AGAIN? Seriously? What is PC gaming coming to? Do i really have to toggle between Steam (for the key) and the "in-game" prompt from Windows Live for the key? All this stuff seriously pisses me off. All the great minds working in game development and this is what we get? If i was a game developer i would switch fields.

Well that's why I don't buy games with stupid Windows Live. It's stupid and adds nothing to the game.

There are lots of great minds working in development, but they're not all working together. Additionally, their job is to make money. If you bought it, their job is done. Besides, it's not like you have to enter your key every time you play so just do it, get it over with, and go have some fun.

Ok, so i did the Windows Live registration. Then it wanted to update. Fine. I let it update. Then it prompts me to save my game and then quit so updater can finish. Wait, i cant save my game because im not logged into Live. Ok, a few minutes are lost because i will have to start over. So i quit. Now the Live updater has failed. WTF?! So, now im back to where i began. Nice. Ok, im just going to download the no-steam/no-live/no-bullshit crack, fuck this shit.

Even though I dont base my game buying on whether or not a game has Games for Windows Live or whatever it is...it is completely fucking stupid and COMPLETELY unneeded as a whole. I remember they developed it so PC gamers could play against console gamers...but I think all of like ONE game used it for this purpose...whats the point of having it in a single player only/no PC vs. console game, that I have no earthly idea...plus it really makes backing up saved games a real pain or straight impossible to do (lost my DiRT 2 saved game with like 30 hours into it...now I dont even play anymore because I dont want to have to do it all over again because I could back my save)...

GFWL is a complete waste of space...

THIS.

Every game I have (legal ones) Ive applied the No-CD/Activation-Piracy bullshit bypass...its simply easier than bothering with juggling disks and having to uninstall virtual drive/everything on you PC just to make my damn game WORK!

Edit: I also have to say that although I handle Steam (no direct like/dislike) it still kinda hits me the wrong way...why do I need to install Steam to play Bioshock 2 or Alien vs. Predator...its just like GFWL just less obtrusive, but still completely unneeded in my opinion...

If you do not sign in you will lose all data. Do you want to update? If you update you will not be signed in and you will lose all updates. Do you want to sign in? If you do not sign in you will lose all meaning to your life. Do you want to lose meaning? FFFUUUUUUUUU....

I just don';t see the point of GFWL at ALL when Steam is involved. They're two completely redundant services.

Download the manual update. I had the same issue with Fallout 3, and a manual update fixed it.

You know, asking for help instead of RAGING!!!1!1 is often easier on your heart.

Goddamn Games for Windows Live client software. Biggest POS Microsoft has ever coded since WindowsME.

That being said, two words: Offline. Profile.

Well no, it's not "broken". If it were nobody could play it. I did, as did many others.

It's goofy, yes. Broken, no.

And the problem isn't on Steam's end, it's the integration with GFWL that's the problem. Though frankly I think Steam should have a policy about no further DRM on games sold through Steam (since Steam itself is already a rock-solid DRM).

This. You need to remember that Steam is just a distributor/retailer. The reason why you had to input the Key again is that Steam does not integrate with the product. You would have to input the key if you bought the game off the shelf. I do not really like the Games For Windows thing either, I found it to be a very annoying interface. But if you bought the boxed version you would have the same trouble. As long as Steam itself isn't crashing or preventing you from loading the program, it's not Steam. But as I recall, I could play Fallout 3 without having to log in or create a GFWL account. However, annoyingly enough, the saves that you make when not signed in are not transferred over (or accessible) when you are signed in.
