-- 2K Games said today that BioShock 2, the sequel to the wholly owned and internally developed title, is being developed by 2K Marin and is planned for release in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009. The critically acclaimed BioShock title has sold over 2 million units worldwide since its launch in August.

2K Marin

Following last month's rumors which saw former 2K Boston BioShock developers starting a new studio in California, Take-Two has officially announcing the formation of 2K Marin. And that's pretty much all the company had to say. Take-Two fed a standard line that the new studio will focus on creating original intellectual property, but will also help in other established 2K brands.

The terse announcement of 2K Marin's formation will be followed up with game announcements early next year according to insiders we've spoken to, most likely on or before GDC in February. Aside from knowing that 2K Marin exists, everything is still hush-hush.

Did Levine go with them?

I'm inclined to say that no, he didn't, but I'm not 100% sure. Rumors were that most of the guys left 2K Boston to create 2K Marin because they hated working for Levine.

That's like a basketball player saying they hate Riley, Popovich or that guy coaching the Lakers - they'll make you win. Levine produced good games.

Fixed. 🙂

But yeah, for someone who has the opportunity to work with someone like him, and not want to...either they are inept, Levine is a horrible person to work for, or they want to venture out on their own. Or a mixture of the possible scenarios?

Well, during his speech at GDC, Levine did say that his design process was a good way to get your team to hate you.

My ending didn't seem to leave much for a sequel! Then again, if they can continue to come up with (creative?) ways to revive Jason Vorhees...

One of the rumors is that Bioshock 2 could be a prequel.

With BioShock 2 in the hands of 2K Marin, and no longer at 2K Boston and 2K Australia, many of us were left wondering if designer and BioShock face Ken Levine would be working on the title. It would appear that he will be, in some capacity, at least, according to Take-Two CEO Ben Feder. He said today that Levine is "a terrific asset to the company and a brilliant game developer" and confirmed, in a roundabout way, that he'd be involved.

While most of the development duties sound like they'll be undertaken by the Marin studio, Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick echoed Feder's praise, saying that Levine is "critical to BioShock." 2K Boston is said to be working on a separate intellectual property for 2K Games, but hopefully Ken will be at the very least creatively consulting on BioShock 2.

Well, that fudges things up a little less.

err, how would you make a sequel to that? They should just do something completely different in terms of plot, style, etc.

I can't wait. This was one of hte best games I've played. My girlfriend used to like watching me play it for the story I suppose 🙂
