BIOS won't post...

I have a Abit AA8 Duramax, P4 3.0 with 1GB (512x2) Patriot DDR533 (PC4200) RAM. Occasionally XP will freeze (usually after system has been on for extended periods) and when I reboot, BIOS won't post and will just make long repeating beeps. However, if I remove power (unplug or manually turn off power supply) overnight, I can sometimes get BIOS to boot into failsafe mode where I can then reset the bios settings. I have tried manually reseting the BIOS on the mobo but since it won't boot the BIOS won't take the configuration. All RAM is in the proper channels for dual channel setup as well. I have had a few heat issues, but nothing has ever gotten to dangerously high temps, ie above 70 degrees celcius. Any suggestions?

The beeps are a code actually. Look for the number of long or short beeps, the sequence, and write down what you get. It'll go through some amount of beeps and then repeat.

Next see what BIOS type you have - Award, Phoenix, or some other. Look up on google something like " BIOS beep codes Phoenix " or something similar. There, you should have a clue what's going on. It'll tell you if it's memory related, a bad video card, or a variety of other things.

May not single-handidly solve your problem but it'll get you started down the right road at least.
