I have flashed my BIOS...with 4 different BIOS's (including beta)...but again, doesn't matter, I no longer have the board...shipping back to Newegg right now for replacement.

I'll be sure to follow up on this thread and let you know how it went. Thanks for all your help!

I'll be interested to hear how this situation continues to develop for you as you get the new board so definitely keep us posted.

I'm afraid I can't offer any advices on getting your specific rig to 4GHz though, you'll be far better off getting advice from folks on this forum who have your exact specific mobo and can walk you thru the bios in infinitely more detail than I can.

If I see where I can post general info to help you out then of course I will do that just as I did here.

Good luck!

I've got a Gigabyte board now that will over time reset it self to 240mhz bus. I don't overclock this machine at all and it goes from default to this. If I over clock it does the same thing. I updated to the latest BIOS and it still does it.

Finally!!! I just found out that I had to adjust the system multiplier or whatever...the one that has letters A-D 2.66, 4.00...that thing, to low as I could, pump up voltage a little bit and I'm crusing at 4ghz no sweat!!!

One quick question...IntelBurnTest getting my CPU up to 86C...that too hot? I'm guessing it is...sits at 40C idle.

Let me know thanks!

Well, without playing with voltage yet...with my heatsink fan at 100% load temps drop to like 72C max according to OCCT testing with IntelBurnTest.

OK...last report today...ran at 4GHZ flawlessly, but that was at 1.5v CPU and 1.45v Northbridge...not toooooo bad, but again, heat was just an issue to me as IntelBurnTest got temps up to and past 80C at some points...Crysis had it pushing 65C. Something to stick with, I just need a decent water cooling setup or perhaps a better air cooler - any recommendations?

Current config is at 3.6ghz with a 1.4v CPU and 1.3v Northbridge...temps maxing at about 67-68C...still a bit too high, but that is at a efficient 100% load using IntelBurnTest. Crysis CPU tests, which I consider max usage for my regular uses (gaming bout it), got it up to but not past 52C...which in my book is completely acceptable by all means and I don't see a game pushing it more than Crysis.

Idle at 3.6ghz is around the 34-38C range, comfortable enough in my opinion to have the PC on 24/7 (just don't like shutting down, wears out other components too quickly). Well, that's about it for me and my problem...still kinda feel icky about the board and the whole situation, but hell, it all works and I'm able to get what I want out of my system now, so it is allllllll good.

OK...CPU life is a bit of a concern, but they're cheap so easily replaced if need be. I won't be keeping this hard ware past a year or so I don't think, I love to upgrade, so if by "lasting a while" you mean the chip could burn out after a couple of years that's not an issue, I'm going for speed, not longevity if you know what I mean.

Also, if I can get temps way down (water cooling or a better air cooler) would higher voltage really be that big of a deal? I mean, if the chip is running cool does voltage matter that much? I can hit 4ghz stable at 1.48v - 1.5v on this particular motherboard...is voltage like that complete overkill?

Most people look for the sweet spot where they are out of the dangerous voltage area. It really comes down to price to performance to enthusiasm. Do you need the extra speed or can you deal with 1.3v at 3.5ghz? Is this for gaming because I doubt the extra half a ghz makes a world of difference.

4ghz @ 1.5 volts I would say you're looking at months of stability, rather than years. Especially if you're getting temps above 65c. At some point that extra current will increase the migration of material within the CPU and death will soon follow.

For the cost of watercolling you could easily buy a faster chip. Investment in that is a long term venture. (I.e. good watercooling > $150)

I need the extra speed cause my HD 4780 is being bottlenecked like a mofo I'm sure. Thats primarily why I opted for the E5200 and the Gigabyte EP45-UD3R was for their overclocking value.

Just by looking at benchmarks I can tell that my CPU even at 3.6ghz is holding my video card back...just a lot of games getting FPS that I'm not using basically the same specs (Vista x86, 4gb RAM, 4870 512MB). Oh well I guess, I mean, an avg of 34fps in Crysis at 1680x1050 with all settings MAXED (DX10) excluding shadows at medium no AA is not too shabby.

I can live with it...

Well, just got a water cooling setup yesterday off of Craigslist here locally for $50! Danger Den CPU block, dual 120mm Swiftech radiator, dual 5.25 reservoir, pump, Scythe fans, tubing, the whole shabang!

Anyways, got my e5200 stable at 4ghz with 1.45v on the core, temps maxing out still (according to OCCT Linpack test) at around 62C which seems a little high to me for a water cooling system...but I guess in either case its still better than the 80C+ that I got on my air cooling setup. Plus, I have the fans running at low RPM due to them being loud as hell high performance fans.

Finally satisfied with my system!

Yeah BIOS was fixed...nothing wrong with it...just seems that the RAM ratio or what have you, was set at 4.00 and it needed to be (or this is how I got it working) 2.66...don't know what the setting is called, don't want to reboot to find out (lazy).

But yeah, in either case, I got 4ghz and OMG is my system rocking...9000+ points in 3DMark Vantage...like I said, problem resolved and I'm completely happy.

E5200 is a nice overclocker too...was able to hit 4.4GHz at 1.65v (LOL) stable but obviously voltage would be an issue and make my CPU too short lived for my tastes...still a very good CPU.
