BIOS update screw up

I have an Asus P4C800-E deluxe with a pair of two 512mb 3500 kingston memory and a P4 2.4c mounted on top.

Last night i tried updating the Bios from 1011 to 1023, and apparently it messed things up.

Rigth after updating the post screen stopped with a one time checksum error (because of the difference with the new BIOS perhaps), but now everytime i turn the computer on, boot stops after right after post with a message that says overclocking failed. After that i'm given the option to enter the bios or boot with default BIOS settings, which in turn screws my windows configuration and hangs my system after a reset (but eitherwise works fine).

No matter what i change in the BIOS, i get the same message everytime.

The interesting thing is that a few months ago i pushed the system to 3ghz for about 3 weeks without a single problem, perfectly stable set up. I reverted it back because i didn't need the overclock, but it's pretty amusing that now i'm getting a failed overlock problem when the actual overlocking was perfectly smooth, bleh...
 
Are you sure the BIOS you used is for your model? Was the BIN file the same size as the previous version?

I hope you used the option to back up your original BIOS. If not, use another machine to download the previous working version from Asus's site and reflash back to the one that worked.
 
Well, i'm sure the BIOS was correct. Sadly, i didn't back up anything, and Asus only has from version 1016 up, mine was 1011.

BTW, i didn't use the flashrom utility, i used the alt-F2 option from boot, would that make a difference ?
 
I tried to go to Asus' site, but it's really slow. You can find old BIOS versions by going to the board and checking for ALL versions, not just the current one.

I still prefer to flash using a bootable floppy disk in DOS.

I think they really have something screwed up.

I had to go back to version 1019. Anything above that would NOT work.

Asus' site is back up to speed. Here's the BIOS page for your board.

There are warnings all over the page about how you flash this BIOS. There is also this warning about whether you have a retail board or one that came with a Compaq system.
This BIOS is for motherboards purchased in a retail ASUS package. If your motherboard is part of Compaq X07 Gaming PC or Compaq X09 Gaming PC systems, you should obtain BIOS updates from HP, as using this BIOS may have adverse effects, such as rendering your system unusable.

You should also read the descriptions of what issues each BIOS addresses.

Ver. 1024.001 is listed as a Beta Version. That may be your problem.

Ver. 1018 looks interesting because it appears to allow you to unlock the CPU, and ver. 1019 addresses a couple of minor problems. All versions after that are to support CPU's that are obviously newer than yours and to patch more SATA problems. If your system is not affected by these issues, you shouldn't worry about updating a working system.
