Bios update for A8nSLIDeluxe

I am having trouble with my bootup having slowed down considerably. Thought it might be my HD but that seems ok. So want to update the Bios. Last time I did this I had a real problem. I currently run Bios 1013 and want to go to 1016. I found it best to use the Asus update through the "Boot to disk" floppy in DOS mode. My question is that ASUS says to: Load "Setup default" in BIOS menu before and after BIOS update.

Is this necessary for a clean install? Would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

yes its necessary - its called "good proceedure"

just curious - what does a bios update have to do with a boot slowdown?

slower boot means virus/spyware/too many processes running a startup

Tried everything. Only thing at startup is Webroot SpySweeper and Zone Alarm Internet Security. No Spyware or viruses. All of a sudden everything slowed down a lot. Just trying other things.
Thanks and let me know if you have other ideas for solutions.

How did you check your hard drive? Even if it "seems" ok that doesn't rule it out 100%. I suggest downloading the diagnostic software and burn it to a CD. Boot from that CD and test your hard drive to rule it out. I fix computers for a living and whenever I see a system that is not infected by spyware/viruses and running VERY slow I can almost always guess that it is the hard drive failing.

Nocturnal,
Just finished running the Hitachi Diagnostic tool and HDD is fine. Have run scannow and chkdsk /x with no problems found. My last possibility is to do a Windows XP Pro install w/o reformat. Any other ideas?
Thanks

run HDTach to see if HDD is running correct thruput

slow boots can also be modem/router stuff. disable/disconnect both and see what happens.

Bozo Galora,
I just ran HDTach and my C drive showed up way slower than my backup G drive and they are both the exact same drive. So it appears that there is a problem with the drive. I also disconnected my modem and it made no difference.
So here is my new issue. I use Norton Ghost 9.0 to make a bootable backup copy of my C Drive. This past week, when I realized I might need to use it, I disconnected my C Drive and tried to boot from my backup drive. It would not boot up. It stuck on the Windows screen and never went any further. I completely reformatted the drive and made another bootable copy last night and it still does not boot. I will start another thread and see if someone has experience with this problem using Norton Ghost 9.0.
Thanks for all your help.
