Hey,
I've got an ASUS A8N-E and I have a question about some of the BIOS Settings.
Init Display First .. should it be PCI slot or PCIEx.

I have an X800XL video card which is a PCI Express card. The default setting is PCI slot.
I have it set ofr PCIEx, but wasn't too sure as the default is PCI Solt

The other quesiton about the BIOS is should Plug and Play be Enabled or Disabled .. does it really matter. I'm using XP-pro.

Q Fan Controller .. is this a good thing ot have enabled or disabled?

I'm getting a "Warning:Your CPU fan ot working .. message at bootup.

But my CPU fan is working and it is plugged into the CPU Fan .. but the in the bIOS it says the CPU fan speed is '0'. I guess I'll go back and make sure it is plugged in all the way , but the fan is spinning and the CPU is 37 DegC and the MB is 35 Deg C ... it is a warm night.

Thanks

Display preference: Completely irrelevant, as long as you don't have two graphics cards on different kinds of busses. When you do, this control lets you choose which one becomes the primary (boot VGA) display. As long as there's only one, it'll always become primary regardless of search order.

Your CPU fan might be too slowly spinning for the monitor chip to accept it as valid. These things are typically corrected in BIOS updates.

The CPU Fan messages are because of Q-Fan ; if I disable it, the fan spins at 4000RPM, if I enable it, the fan spins close to 1000 (huge difference in noise, 5 degrees celsius more). Even when I set the "Fan Warning" threshold to 800 (minimum), I still would get occasional CPU Fan warnings upon bootup so I disabled the CPU Fan monitor...

The fan issue sounds similar to the setup in my VNF4, where the high and low temperature limits the user is allowed to choose cause the fan to ramp up so slowly that the CPU stabilizes about 37C.

My solution is to disable the BIOS fan control (at least until the BIOS is changed to allow more rational limits). Instead, I use SpeedFan to control the fan and it generally is inaudible - typically running around 1400 rpm, ranging upward as room temp increases. This is with the CPU setpoint at 28C.

The stock AMD fan is audible at 2800rpm, max speed is 3300+

Pci as first video device is ok. The board will default to whatever video you are using. Asus bios is very picky about readings during startup. But once asus probe loads, the readings may actually rise enough to get rid of warning messages about low rpm for fans. It's a nuisance that I wouldn't put up with, so I stopped using asus some years ago. Also, the power supply readings can cause the same false warnings about voltage and rpms, and even trigger a "cpu not installed" or similar message.

I ran into the same problem trying to use Q-Fan.

The 80mm fan on my CPU had a max RPM of around 5000. When I would enable Q-Fan I kept getting those same low fan warnings and when I would turn it off my fan would spin at 5000+ RPM's.

I decided to just replace my fan with one that maxed out at 2500 RPMs and turn Q-Fan off. No more warning and no noise.

I don't OC and my CPU idles around 30C so going to the 2500 RPM fan wasn't a big deal.
