I downloaded the latest available bios for my friend's computer based on mercury motherboard, from motherboard manufacturer's site. The zip file after unzipping yielded a bios file named ----.ROM. Is it a BIOS file?
Please answer.

File names are irrelevant. Even a file called SAUSAGE.JAR might contain a perfectly fine BIOS image, while a file YOURBIOS.ROM might be a plain text files.

(Hardly, you say? Well I have had RMA cases where users have managed to flash the README.TXT file into the machine. You name it, I've seen it ...)

Go by the size - BIOS images are the same size as the chip they go into, typically 131,072 or 262,144 bytes for 128/256 KByte ROM chips, respectively.

ECS Uses the *.rom files, never had a problem...
The previous user mention the file size, which is a great hint to determining if it's a binary bios file or not..

Yes .ROM is the most common I have seen I think my old MSI board used that and my Asus does too.
