BIOS Fears

Hi, I have a ASRock 939DUAL-SATA2 motherboard coming and an Opteron 146 on it's way to.

I was expecting to have to update the BIOS 1.04 (Supports Opteron CPUs), with the Opteron 146 installed. I assumed the motherboard would see the CPU as somthing else untill I update the Bios.

But I just read in an other forum that the motherboard will not post (needs to post, to update BIOS) with the Opteron CPU, and you'll need to get a CPU that the BIOS supports to get it to post, update the BIOS, then drop in yous Opteron 146

AAAAAAAAAAAA who's buying to two CPU's, Please tell me this is not true.

Most times the machine will post but will not recognize the cpu as an opteron. You should be fine with just the opty.

I don't know if this is the case. I would call the vendor you purchased the M/B from or the manufacturer of the M/B and ask them. If this is true, then e-mail the M/B manufacturer and ask them to send you an updated CMOS chip. You should not be obligated to purchased 2 CPUs.

Thank you, That's what I was expecting, I'll e-mail the manufacturer, to be sure, I hope this is not the case, I've never replaced a CMOS chip before.

Thank you
Jim
