BIOS doesn't see HD anymore

Hi everyone,
I have been a stealth user for about a year, checking in to see how others have solved problems that I have run across. I got a new one that I can't find any other posts about.

Three days ago I did a fresh install of 98SE and finished getting all my applications on last night. Norton diagnostics checked out fine, McAfee found no viruses, zone alarm up and running (for cable modem), everything just perfect like a new computer. Test drove all my apps, everything was perfect, so I went to bed.

I woke up this morning and instead of the screen saver, I found the blue screen of death (the NIC driver .vxd shown as the culprit). So I rebooted for about the millionth time in 3 days and received the message "PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT." Turns out my BIOS no longer "saw" my hard drives C & D, nor my CD (E) or CDRW (F).

I have been running my Athlon 1.3 with an ASUS A7m266, 256Mb Ram, for about 9 months I think. Anyway, it's always autodetected all my drives in BIOS, so I attempted to auto detect them all again and it found only D, E, and F--no C.

Then I had to come to work, so here I am wondering what the heck to try. Here's what I thought to try:
1) check hard drive connections
2) connect present C in place of the other master on the other IDE cable and try detecting it there
3) run MAXTOR diagnostic disk (manufacturer of the drive--it's 14 months old BTW, just out of warranty)
4) reflash BIOS (probably unrelated, but I just flashed it about a week ago with a newer version)
5) discharge BIOS

Any other ideas? Thanks everyone!

It has always been set as master since I purchased it, and D is the slave on that IDE cable.

I would try moving it to the secondary channel and see if it auto-detects.
What happens if you manually enter the CHS info into the BIOS?

If your drive is 14 months old, it most certainly is STILL UNDER WARRANTY.
All Maxtor drives (IDE) are warranteed for 3 years.

Cool! I thought it was out of warranty. Well, if it turns out to be a drive failure it's not as bad. Thanks!
