my buddy is getting an error, something about a bios checksum error, and now he no longer can see his HDD. When he inserts his win98 startup disk in it makes the ramdrive drive C!

any ideas?

Try clearing the cmos. There should be a jumper or a couple pins on the motherboard to short togther to clear it. Should be near the battery.

don't forget to turn off the power before you go into the case!

If all that has been suggested does not work, try re-seating the memory. I have seen bad memory and memmory that came up a little in the slot cause this problem.
