BIOS Checksum error

I've build a new computer based on an ECS 755-A2 MB, Athlon 3200+ CPU and running XPSP1.
All went fine until I installed two PCI expansion cards: an Agere voice modem and an ATI HDTV card.

I installed each separately.
After each install, I got the error message:
CMOS checksum error. Loading defaults.
The system won't boot into XP.
When I check the BIOS, the date has been reset to 1/1/03.
I fix the date and time and the boot sequence (the system has no floppy) and everything loads and works fine -- unil I install the next PCI card.

What's going on?
I have a workaround, but is this a signal of worse things to come?

Yes, there are essentially two options:
Unclean/interrupted/loss of power has corrupted the CMOS settings; simply remove the battery from the motherboard and unplug your power supply, and let it sit for about a minute, then put everything back together (make sure the motherboard loses -all- power; if you have an LED like many asus and abit boards do, make sure it turns off for a period of time WITH the battery removed). When you turn it on, go into BIOS and select "Load Optimized Defaults" or something similar, and then run through the screens and re-set everything how it was.

The other option is that a power irregularity or static discharge has fried your CMOS chip, but this is not very likely (if the error persists even with removing the card that caused the issue then this is most likely your problem which would require replacing the motherboard).
