So for the last 3 months i have been having intermittant issues with my RAID 0 array(2 Seagate 7200.12 1TB drives). Its running the raid off the Intel ICH10R chip on my mobo not the marvell POS.
full system specs in sig.
This raid array has only my games installed on it, mostly steam(steam folder is 857GB) as well as all my GOG games(less than 20GB), and a few stand alone retail games(75GB).
Am having zero issues on any other drive connected to my PC only the raid, all non-raid drives also connected to ICH10R.
I noticed my steam games(most of them) were having crashing and hanging issues and sometimes would not even load, and everytime i would check the local files with the steam utility it would report that a few were messed up and had to be redownloaded and it would redownload and i could play that game for a few weeks and then it would happen again.
Through logfiles and ramdumps/crash log files i figured out eventually this is data corruption on the raid array causing this issue.
I ran multiple health tests on both hard drives in another computer after breaking the array and zero filling both drives and both came back reporting healthy every time, and the performance was up there with what it should be so i came to the conclusion that the drives themselves were fine.
Ran memtest on memory to insure it was ok, tried different GPU drivers(going back 1 year) and disabling SLI and lowering GPU overclocks. Tried lowering CPU overclock to stock as well as running a battery of CPU/GPU stress testing to insure heat was not the issue. Reinstalled windows, 3 times. system seemed to be fine as far as i could tell.
So i then reinstalled drives, made array again, restored files from a backup that was made long enough ago it had no corruption and sure enough everything worked great but within a week my games were crashing again and steam reporting bad files in multiple games.
Finally i decided since i had tried everything i could think of i was going to update the bios, i have had this mobo for years and it was running the second bios version for my board and there were 7 new updated bios revisions out. So i installed the new version of the bios, spent a hour or so setting up my CPU overclock again and making sure i had the setting right and then zero filled my 2 raid drives and restored the backup image, again.
Now its been 2 months since i updated bios, drives have zero data corruption, have not had one single crash.
So does someone want to tell me how the bios that ran that board a-ok for over 2 years all of a sudden out of nowhere started crapping out on me? I thought the ICH10R chip was software raid so that the bios wouldnt even have an effect on it as it relied on windows drivers, so how did the bios even cause this issue and why did updating it fix it?
