BIOS can't see HD, but windows can?

I suppose this isn't a 'problem' since I can do everything I need to do with this HD, but why wouldn't the BIOS be able to see the HD when Win2k sees it under the Disk Management utility?

I have 4 IDE devices setup as follows:

Primary IDE:
Master: 200GB w/ jumpers set to Master
Slave: 10GB w/ jumpers set to Slave

Secondary IDE:
Master: CDROM w/ jumpers set to Master
Slave: 20GB IBM Deskstar w/ jumpers set to Slave <-- This one the BIOS won't acknowledge

Some model info:
IBM DESKSTAR 22GXP 18.0GB HD ULTRA ATA/66 3.5LP 9MS
M/N: DJNA371800
P/N: 25L2659

The jumper settings for this HD are kind of non-standard. There's overall 16 different configurations possible, but I chose what seems to be the standard configuration. Here's what it looks like:
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/djna/djnajum.htm

I have it configured as 16-logical head: Device 1 (Slave), which is the 2nd image down on the left.

Any help would be appreciated!

see what happens if you change the jumper settings around - but, then again, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If you can use the drive normally, fine.

The reason I want to resolve this is because I'm making this system a dual-boot and don't yet know if Linux can find it. I may just put it in another system if I can't seem to figure out what's happening.

try the knoppix bootcd = it will usually try not to write anything to the hdds. doesn't like ntfs that much though.

Boot into it, then see if knoppix has a problem - if not, then you are ok.

montag,

The problem is with my BIOS not recognizing the drive, how would Knoppix help me solve this problem?

Knoppix live cd will TELL YOU IF LINUX SEES THE DRIVE without actually installing Linux on it. I've run into this "bios doesn't see it but the OS does" problem before and I can't honestly tell you what it means, how to fix it, etc since it never really affected me much.

Give the Knoppix Live CD a try and report back.

if you are worried about whether linux would see your drive, then knoppix is a distro of linux, and will tell you if your drive can be seen.

although it is a prob that bios doesn't see the drive, it doesn't affect your computer [how, i don't know].

It would be a prob if linux doesnt see the hdd - this is an easy test, as knoppix won't trash or touch your hdd, and you will be able to play a little
