Bios can't detect HD and cdroms at same time........help plz

i have 1 ide port w/ 2 slots. My HD is in the main one, and im trying to hook my (2 cdrom drives (1 cdrw and 1 cdrom)) into the other. What's strange is, if i don't have my cdrom's plugged into the 2nd slot, the bios detects the HD. BUT if i have the cdroms plugged in the 2nd slot while the hds still plugged in the 1st, the bios doesn't detect EITHER the HDS nor the cdroms. Someone help plz?

are you sure you have the CDROMS set as master and slave properly?

Yes...my HP 9710i is Master and my Pine 56x is slave. While on the other slot of the ide port...the c:\ is the master and the d:\ is the slave.
