Bio-weapons lab found

U.S. officials are now confident they have confirmed at least one of the claims Secretary of State Colin Powell made to the U.N. about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. It's a van found in northern Iraq which closely resembles drawings Powell presented to the U.N. and which Iraqi scientists said was part of a mobile biological weapons lab.

The van contains fermenting vats LIKE those used in the first stage of producing biological weapons. But they were washed down with a caustic cleaner, so there were NO traces of biological material.

The U.S. still has NOT found any chemical or biological agents and some officials are starting to suggest there might not be any, just the equipment needed to manufacture them, reports CBS News Correspondent David Martin.

Having the materials to make WMD was not justification for the war, having WMD was. This doesn't prove anything, but it should be interesting to see people try to spin this and other insignificant finds into being enough evidence to justify the war. Still early in the game, lets wait and see how this pans out.

I don't see how finding more empty mobile labs in the future will equate to the notion that Iraq possessed WMD at the time war was declared.

Lets issue playing cards with pictures of the munitions (like the ones taken in '91 of the stuff we sold them) to the folks and when they get a match... all the media decends on the spot.. take glossy 8 X 11 's with circles and arrows and a description on the back of what each one is...

Well, it's pretty likely that some people are going to make more out of it than it is... it's a van, that much is known, until independent experts examine it, i will believe that a van was found, nothing more...

I could really care less whether we agree or not, and when I see something wrong, I will point it out and critisize when appropriate. I don't beleive in blind patriotism. In this case, the evidence points to just another false alarm, you don't have to be a pessimist to see that.

They think the gov. is infallible, and just because Bush is the pres. he must be right. I've not read enough of your threads, so I'm not going to label you one, but perpetual optimists tend to be naive and easily manipulated.

And how am I not being one? Realistically speaking, we have not found any WMD. Realistically speaking, we have no solid leads (all the high level people are denying the existence of WMD and others have gotten us nowhere) and the number of sights left to check has been getting smaller and smaller. Realistically speaking, Bush told the world, citing "solid" evidence, that this war was to disarm Saddam who without a doubt possesed WMD. And finally, realistically speaking, if we don't find anything we're going to look like the worlds biggest jackasses. I don't see how I'm not being a realist.

U.S. intelligence officials said that Ammash, 49, is believed to have played a key role in rebuilding Baghdad's biological weapons capability since the first Persian Gulf War in 1991.

She was born in 1953 in Baghdad, and her father was Salih Magdi Ammash, a former vice president, defense minister and member of the Baath Party's leadership. Saddam Hussein reportedly ordered his execution in 1983.

Ammash received her undergraduate degree at the University of Baghdad, master of science in microbiology from Texas Woman's University, in Denton, Texas, and received a doctorate in microbiology from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1983.
