Is anyone using bio metrics for user authentication?
If so would you recommend?

i am looking into using it for a workstation that has to be used by several different users. They all have to use a single username & password to access this workstation. we would like to be able to assign 3 different thumbprints to a single username. and then assign a complex password to the username.

If anyone has a better way to do this or if i am just not making myself clear please let me know. thanks

M$ biometric finger print readers work well and intigrate within windows quickly. They also do a fine job of working on domains and have no problems in a work enviroment. They are cheap and if you want to just type your password, you still can. It can use any/all your fingers with many people if you want.

we have looked at one from "eyed hampster" that one looks like it will do everything we need it to do. Cost is not a real big concern right now.

I looked at it last year... downfalls are still:
1. Scalability...most require a seperate authentication server, in addition to your MS domain. (assuming that's your primary info)
2. Data security: What happens when someone steals the authentication server (or AD), with all the biometric info on it. How do you explain to people that they can't use those fingers for biometric auth any more, since the data got stolen?
3. IBM Thinkpad, builtin: Worked pretty well, reasonably fast. Domain software wasn't great. The individual (standalone) software was "ok".

Biometric devices work great. However, the software isn't working so well. Most software is limited to the scope of software you use. It's a common issue for users who wish to use alternative browsers to have issues getting the biometric device to authenticate. If you wish to manage more than one entry per site/user, you may also have issues. If the prices weren't so low, I wouldn't recommend what so ever but it's cheap enough to look into.
