It always seems that way the movies seem to get people thinking, Is that possible?

You can tell the reporter doesn't know much about microelectronics (or doesn't care):
1) Silica = silicon dioxide; it's much hard to go from silicon dioxide -> silicon than the reverse.
2) The biologist is wrong about semiconductor fabrication having problems making features smaller than the 380-750nm wavelength of visible light - the new Intel CPUs are made using a 45nm process.
3) Being able to grow 1000 nm features (1 micron) doesn't sound so impressive with current processes making 45nm features and with the biological version only being ready an unknown number of years/decades in the future.

Reporters can only get away with these silly stories because their readership doesn't know any better -- educate yourselves!

PS - Granted, it's a CBC science story, so perhaps I shouldn't have expected anything better.

i think there trying to work with synthetic diamonds as well as wafers.

They it would have a heat tollerance to 2000C.

Once the diamond chips come out, i guess we can offically roll out star trek. ISO Chips anyone?

:p

But imagine a diamond processor which heat tollerance is 2k C. LOL.... Id hate to see the gear required to cool/disapate that.

KiloWatt Tec's would become very popular. :p

Processors specd to run at 2000C? Intel could resurrect the P4, and see if it clocks to 10Ghz!

Still way too low of a temp to start a fusion reaction, though.

Wow. I actually thought about this in 8th grade when we learned about diatoms. Since they are almost fully made out of silicon/silica, they would be perfect for processors. This has happened to me twice now. One with this and the other with a 3D printer that "prints" 3D objects. I need to start putting my ideas on paper.......
