Seems the default SSH daemon is currently binding to port 22. I installed openssh and it will not run unless I disable
the normal ssh that came with freebsd. how can i do so?

Out of curiosity, is there anything wrong with the OpenSSH that comes with FreeBSD?

Yeah, sounds likely, my question should have been more like "Why not upgrade through FreeBSD's cvs(or whatever they use)?" :)

For a while FreeBSD was keeping an older version and back porting patches. I am not sure why though.

First OpenSSH and OpenBSD are seperate projects. Saying the OpenBSD team developed it is not quite entirely correct. Although close enough that no one but people like me with no life bother correcting it. Anyway, just because FreeBSD installs OpenSSH by default dosn't mean it wasn't developed by someone else. For instance think X.
