What confuses me is why tape it and then leak it? Im a bit hazy on how the CIA got control of this tape but why would OBL tape evidence?

They spent so much time translating it because they didn't want to be accused misinterpreting it. Apparently, they had four sets of translators to make sure they got it as correct as possible.

Also, they were wary of giving bin Laden any more airtime on American airwaves.

Another thing, bin Laden is relaxed and happy in the video. The gov't was wary of broadcasting this pleasant image of Osama to Osama's supporters and sending the false signal that Osama is okay. It's obvious that since the video was shot, Osama has had to run and probably isn't feeling so smug.

I heard three representative Mid East authorities interviewed who had seen the tape. All three said they felt nothing on it would convince those whose minds were already convinced that Bin Laden is innocent. What else is new. They did implu though that the evidence that he had prior knowledge of the event was pretty strong. The issue for them was whether he is a or the mastermind.

A side issue, interestingly, is that the attack seems to be very popular among Saudi clerics.

Many are calling for more details on the origins of this tape as experts around the world tell how easy it is for someone with skill to fake it. There are over 100 such professional video experts who would be capable of doing this in the US alone, let alone in intelligence services.

Interesting details which don't make sense:

1) Date reference on the tape doesn't coordinate with the reference to the full moon. 11/9 was not a full moon.

2) Bin Laden is wearing a ring on his right hand. In every video and photgraph ever presented of Bin Laden before this video surfaced, he never wears any jewelry except for a watch.


Bob Crabtree, editor of the magazine Computer Video, said it was impossible to judge whether the video was a fake without more details of its source. "The US seems simply to have asked the world to trust them that it is genuine."
