The response in the United States was as expected. Most Americans were already convinced of bin Laden's culpability, and now many Muslim-Americans are convinced that OBL was behind the attacks. But, the tape was primarily released to sway opinion in the Arab world overseas that Osama was indeed behind the attacks, and thus U.S. bombing is justified. While some have been convinced, many remain skeptical:

____________

Many in Arab World Call Bin Laden Video a Fake

DUBAI (Reuters) - Washington's allies were quick to judge the latest videotape of Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) to be final proof of his guilt on Thursday, but in the Arab world many dismissed the footage as false propaganda.

While some senior Arab officials declared themselves convinced, it was harder to find ordinary citizens who did and most governments in the region maintained silence on the issue.

``I think this recording is forged ... I don't believe this tape is authentic,'' said Sheikh Mohammad Saleh, a Saudi cleric.

Ali, a Saudi civil servant, concurred. ``The picture is real but the voice is not. It could be a voice over,'' he said. He had to watch the videotape on a regional satellite station as Saudi state television failed to broadcast it.

``Do the Americans really think the world is that stupid to think that they would believe that this tape is evidence?'' asked Abdul Latif Arabiat, head of Jordan's mainstream Islamist party the Islamic Action Front.

``In my view this tape has been fabricated by Washington to condemn bin Laden and conceal America's ugly crimes in Afghanistan (news - web sites),'' said Yousef Abdul Hamid, an Amman taxi driver.

____________

Is there anything the U.S. can do to convince the Arab world that Osama deserves our wrath? No matter what we say, it seems, we'll be dismissed as spreading "propaganda".

i haven't seen the tape yet, but i dunno. if the u.s. government was going to make a fake tape, do you really think the quality would be bad enough for the average citizen to notice? i mean come on...

I saw part of the tape on CNN. I must admit the tape was only average quality and the audio was fairly indistinct. I am not doubting bin Laden's involvement, but the tape was not the overwhelming piece of evidence it was billed to be (unless the translation actually matched what was said).

I really don't get why we really need to constantly prove that Bin Laden did it... the fact he did it is irrelevant... what is relevant is that he's the head of a serious major terrorist group and that terrorism needs to be abolished. considering this, saying he masterminded the bombings is a moot point... he needs to be dealt with regardeless... showing this tape really shouldn't make a difference.

did anyone see nightline? the american bureau-chief for Al-Jazeria said that there were some that wanted to analyze the tape to see if it was legit or not. he said it was a bit odd, because certain parts of his speach, what seemed to be irrelevant discussions were unclear, but when he spoke about the towers those parts were very clear.

gizelle fernadez also made the comment on PI that the timing of this tape finding was questionable.

Come on folks, are we really going to analyze this for the next 30 years? Join the skeptics claiming we never went to the moon and footage was all fabricated. The fact is, we could get bin laden making a public appearance at the white house to declare what he did wrong and you'll still find hardliners finding it to be a "fake".

yeah, well what can you expect. if they were in the plane and Osama bin Hidin' was flying it they would still deny that it was him. who cares what they think when most of the time they can't think for themselves anyway.
