I just wanted to share my joy as I have been considering learning Linux for some time and finally dove in. (OK, you got me-I have a dual boot🙂). I wanted to have a new project, so I decided that I'd learn either Fedora or Debian and build a beowulf out of a few old rigs. Then I'll be using that beowulf to fold or boinc Einstein 😱! In order to accomplish this (especially since the client nodes will be diskless) I had and have some learning to do, but I am thrilled with this OS! No wonder all the penguins are smiling in the pictures. I had no idea that users were allowed such control over their machines.

Linux->Windows
as
BYO/Custom Rigs->Dell

It's no comparison. Now, I'll not be a total convert, because I need my games sometimes too, but I am seriously going to switch most of my rigs over to Fedora for now and maybe Debian, Suse, Mandrake, Lycoris, Linspire, or another distro later (so far I only have those 6 on cd!).

Anyhow-I just wanted to encourage anybody else who is smart, patient and motivated to bite the bullet and give it a shot. It's like tearing the training wheels off your bicycle when you're 4--You very well could fall and hurt yourself. That might even happen a couple of times. But once you get your balance and figure it out, it's really cool and you're glad you did it.

I feel the same way about linux, Its very liberating to use after a decade of MS software. Ive joined the reveloution I plan to eventually have all of my pcs running linux. My wife is the one I need to win over next. There is a lot to learn about it but its well worth it, It gives you a much greater sense of what is actually going on inside the box.

Yep, I couldn't agree more, Tectron. I think it'll be hard to convince my wife. She works for a software company, but has no time to commit to learning a new OS. Granted, she also doesn't need to learn the ins and outs, just simple usage. There's also the fact that I value my marriage so I may not even ask!! 🙂

lol, Yeah my wife gets upset if anything changes on her computer, so she is a hard sell.

OMG, tell me about it. We're going OT, so I'll quit, but yep-150% agree with you. My wife gets mad if I change her screen resolution, or her desktop or anything. She did like that I hooked her up with Firefox instead of Internet Destroyer, but that was about it. Oh, she likes contributing her rig to distributed computing too.

I couldn't have said it better! It may not be for everyone but if more "IT junkies" give it a shot, Billy G would seriously have something to worry about 🙂
