New bill for blind Texas hunters
Blind hunters would be able to use laser-sighted rifles to hunt animals in Texas, if a bill introduced in the state's legislature is successful.
Republican Edmund Kuempel proposed an amendment to existing law that would permit "legally blind" people to use a laser-sighting device when hunting.

Current Texas law prohibits the use of laser sights, spotlights and headlights for hunting purposes.

A sighted person would be legally required to accompany the blind hunter.

"This opens up the fun of hunting to additional people, and I think that's great," said Mr Kuempel.

Blind hunters are not a new phenomenon in Texas.

Under current procedures, a sighted guide can assist a visually-impaired hunter by peering over the hunter's shoulders and advising where to aim the gun and when to pull the trigger.

However, hunters say that without a laser pointer it is difficult to time the shot.

Laser sights, spotlights and headlights are banned in hunting in Texas, because they can make the animals freeze in their tracks.

If the bill is passed in when the state legislature reconvenes in January, it will probably not become law until 2008.

Mr Kuempel's bill would give the state until 1 January 2008, to come up with a definition of legally blind so the law could be enforced.

Wow, even Cheney couldn't miss!

I don't get it. Would this be a staged hunt where the animals wear beeping collars or something?

"Legally blind" represents a range of vision... you could be "legally blind" but be able to see relatively well using optics.

They are just going to point them south and tell them to shoot towards any spanish sounding words.

I think hunting is despicable, but I don't see justification for telling others they can't do it, if suffering is avoided.

Admittedly, I and perhaps some other liberals are not entirely rational about such issues, preferring 'feel good' policies that don't hold up to our positions on eating meat, letting predatory animals hunt and kill on preserves, etc. I don't want anywhere near animal parts before they're prepared, much less killing the animals, but I like the dishes.

On the other hand, my inconsistency does not prove there's no problem with the people who enjoy the killing, either.

What would make more sense is allowing a blind person to designate another person to fill his quota. Provided the blind person has some tangible involvement in the hunt in the form of being present at least in the general area of the hunting party.

Allowing a blind person to shoot a rifle in areas where there are other hunters "possibly" walking around is patent nonsense.

Um, perhaps you guys aren't aware of what legally blind really is. Here in Washington State, I have a friend who is "legally blind" and gets all of his college subsidized by the government because of it. He also has his drivers license and drives to school every day. Why? Because he simply has an eye disorder that classifies him as blind under the law, but that doesn't mean he can't see.

I'm not worried about their ability to site a target (my previous post was mostly sarcasm) but I would be concerned about their ability to clear their field of fire. I guess if they had a spotter with them...

I live out here where most people enjoy hunting, but I know a lot of people who think as you do. Some of them felt strongly enough about it to become vegetarians..... for a while. They always come back to eating meat though, at least the ones I know did.

As far as blind people hunting, I'd imagine that they would almost exclusively be people who can see, just not as well as most of the rest of us. What sport would it be if all you did was pull the trigger when someone told you to? That wouldn't be hunting at all.

Great! If it passes, all the jackoffs in Texas won't have to worry about losing their hunting licenses if they don't listen to their mothers when they warn them that, if they don't stop what they're doing, they'll go blind.

There was a thread in the OT forum recently asking who'd win a war between California and Texas (it got locked). I'm not sure if having armed blind people would help or hurt Texas in that hypothetical war, but it does indicate an armed and dangerous state. 😉

I'd contribute money if there was a fund to send Bush and Cheney on a blind hunting trip in Texas.

What they should have is a bill to hunt the blind but only with blindfolds and the blind also armed.

Retroactive legislation to make Cheney a legal hunter?

I believe George W Bush signed a law in Texas that allows people to carry guns into church. This is just another insane law gun nut law from Texas.
I'm sure this will make everyone in Texas safer.

This bill was heavily promoted by the AARP too. I figure its for people who grew up hunting, its an American tradition, a great cultural phenomenon and sport. But these people got older and their eyesight diminished, and they still want to be able to go out (probably with their sons and grandsons) and be free to squeeze off a few shots (pheasant, quail most likely, wide dispersal). i see nothing wrong with it. and the cheney jokes are wearing thin children.

i think hunting is a great sport, one of the oldest professions. and guns make hunting more humane (less painful to be shot via gun then clubbed or speared to death). i only resent people who kill and waste the animal. the kind of people who tortured their pets when they were kids or something.
