Ouch ouch ouch. It's bad enough he repeated this slander twice (the second time coming the day after Memorial Day of all times), but the part that offends me most is his disingenuous lying about it to cover his own ass. What a douche.

Not defending his stupid words, but IIRC you're a lawyer and therefore know you can't slander a dead person. True it's a technicality and it's not like you were planning to prosecute him, but a word without the legal baggage might be a better choice. Here's some options from the Thesaurus:

asperse, assail, attack, backbite*, bad-mouth*, belie, belittle, besmirch, blacken name*, blackwash, blaspheme, blister, blot, calumniate, curse, damage, decry, defile, denigrate, depreciate, derogate, detract, dishonor, disparage, hit*, hurt, injure, malign, muckrake, pan*, plaster, revile, roast*, scandalize, scorch, slam*, slur, smear*, smirch, sneer, strumpet, sully, tarnish, tear down, traduce, vilify

* = informal or slang

I beg to differ. Although slander is no longer actionable once the object of the slander is dead, that doesn't render the word inaccurate. It's as though you're saying a robbery that occurred 20 years ago (outside the statute of limitations) can no longer be called a robbery, because it can no longer be criminally prosecuted.

Frankly I also think this a stupid distraction from the topic at hand, which is itself worthy of discussion.

well, i guess when you've been around as long as he has, finding new ways to bump his ratings without mimmicking howard stern and oprah is getting pretty hard to do. ;)

*edit* - it is not nor will it ever be my intent to disparage or demean in any way shape or form the honor and respect our veterans rightfully deserve. (my father being a veteran of WWII fighting against the reich as an infantry rifleman in italy, france and germany).

O'Reily was definitely in the wrong and a blowhard - but I think I caught a piece of spittle at the end there.

You can almost forgive him for making a stupid statement like that. People make mistakes.

What's unforgivable is a complete lack of an apology for the statement and an attempt to put off what he said by claiming he meant to say something else.

In his next show he should have corrected his statement and apologized. That didn't happen. Shame on him.

Actually, I think the correct term for a robbery which occured outside the statute of limitations is 'Indefinite Material Displacement'.

seems to me that o'reilly was/is under a lot of pressure to screw up the way he did. it's rather indicative of a guy who screwed up during an emotional outburst and then lied himself into an indefensible position that took himself out of his game.

the coverup is s.o.p. as a delaying tactic while fox asesses the situation to put the correct spin on the issue to avoid legal and publicity hazards, imo.

happens alot in the media doesn't it?

Lets stop kidding ourselves here....Faux News has no shame....They are no more than puppets for the illegal war.
They will spout and slander to support the corporate whores, that really is their only purpose....

They have no shame, it does not exist in their reality.....to them all things are a means to an end...and no matter the means...

Faux news is basically the background singers and supportors of this inept evangelical choir.....

America like descartes are beggining to slowly awaken from their slumber.....about time....

Fair and Balanced.

No surprise. Just like the current administration...distorting the facts and outright lying

It's hard to believe anyone can consider Fox News fair or balanced. It's hard to say who is full of it more on that show.

yep. if you can't beat 'em, join 'em (memogate, anyone?)

Too bad, Fox has no reason to sink to the depths of the other disgusting liberal networks. This makes me wonder if the Normandy switch on the transcript was the result of one person and not the higher ups at Fox.

That piece of scum Rather resigned, I don't think the same will happen with O'Reilly as his show is not considered news.

Unfortunately for some of you, O'Reilly will brush this off just as he does everything else and continue on, not letting the facts get in the way of his editorials.

Oh well, on to the next scandal

I'm not sure if you're serious or not because Fox frequently misleads people, while rarely correcting itself, if ever.

Seems this was a sen. mcarthy lie.

Well, it's nice to see him pick up where Joe McCarthy left off up.

But somehow she neglects to mention McCarthy's first moment in the national spotlight. That was his infamous 1949 campaign on behalf of Nazi S.S. officers who were convicted of war crimes for the massacre of American troops in the town of Malmedy during the Battle of the Bulge. On their orders, 83 American prisoners of war had been murdered by Waffen S.S. machine-gunners. The S.S. officers were sentenced to death, but McCarthy insisted that the entire case was a frame-up, with confessions obtained by horrific torture. He intervened in Senate hearings on the case and lied repeatedly during his defense of the Nazi murderers. His most spectacular claim was that the American investigators had crushed the testicles of German prisoners as an interrogation technique.

McCarthy was later shown to have served as the pawn of neo-Nazi and communist provocateurs who were using the Malmedy case to whip up anti-American sentiment in postwar Germany. The main source for his false charges concerning Malmedy was a Germany lawyer named Rudolf Aschenauer, whose closest ties were to the postwar Nazi underground and to American right-wing isolationists, but who has also been identified as a communist agent. Aschenauer testified at U.S. Senate hearings in Germany that he had passed information about Malmedy to McCarthy. The S.S. officers were guilty, as the Senate report confirmed -- although most of them later got their death sentences commuted in a gesture to former Nazi officials who aided the West in the Cold War. But McCarthy had succeeded in his larger purpose, winning publicity for himself and casting a negative light on the war-crimes trials.

I said this in the OT thread. I hope a group of WWII vets pick this up and inform faux of their displeasure of it and they will be boycotting faux and all sponsors. They should do this very loudly and very publicly and tell everyone why. o'reilly is scum, and needs to be purged from the system.
