Xbox is fully hacked without a modchip. Soon lamers will be playing pirated xbox live games online.

I think it is cool for the people that want to run linux on their xbox but this is definately bad overall.

hack

There are other sources out there that explain more detail.

Those people are stupid. They tried blackmailing Microsoft and started crying when they didn't respond, and are now backpeddling like crazy. This is not information that should be leaked to the public and those responsible will most likely be sued. Sure, the vulnerablility is there, but unless it's advertised, it can't be exploited because no one will know about it. What possible good can come from releasing the full details of this vulnerablility? It will only help other hackers. They should have just released the info to Microsoft (without their silly demands) and been done with it. It's like someone finding a way into your house and then putting it on the internet for millions to see. Those people will certainly be sued not only for hacking the xbox, but also for blackmail. Also, if you believe them when they said that their demands were just a suggestion, get your head out of your ***. If they were only suggestions, why didn't they give MS their work? Why are they still sitting on it threatening to release it to the public?

So what?

Who cares if the XBox can be hacked?

A few geeks will run Linux on the XBox as a cheap computer.

In the grand scheme of things, however, the hack will have almost zero imact.

I disagree, this will easily allow lamers to play HACKED xbox live games. This will open up all sorts of cheating on Xbox live. This is definately bad.

Matt (Noggin) works for Microsoft....it'd be hard for him to say otherwise :)

I am sure that MS will be able to detect this hack at some point and I hope they completely disable any xbox on live that is using this hack. Simply banning them isn't enough. I have no problem with normal guys wanting this hack to run Linux on it.

Oh, this is true... I'm not debating that at all.

My opinion, however, is that the number of XBox owners who will A) know about the exploit, and B) take advantage of it, will be small enough to have a negligible impact.

Hacking for the sake of hacking is one thing, but this group is trying to hide its greed under the guise of "goodwill."

Official statement from Free-X regarding exploits.

Since our attempts to contact Microsoft have become public knowledge our team has been accused of attempting to extort or blackmail Microsoft, this is not true as we have made every attempt possible to make contact with Microsoft to offer the following:

- A complete summary of all hacking technologies (many of these technologies have not been released).
- Source Codes.
- All attacks which have been developed but not yet released.
- To sign a Non-disclosure Agreement regarding our discoveries.
- Further research on exploits, which would be exclusive to Microsoft.
- Full names of all hackers involved upon agreement of legal protection from Microsoft.
- Assistance in the development of future security for the XBox by working with Microsoft.

For the exchange, we were requesting but not demanding the following:

- Complete access to all documentation (chipsets, video etc.) to assist in developing a better Linux for the XBox.
- A signed Linux loader.
- Protection from Microsoft or support if any organisation/government attempted to prosecute members of our team.
- Refunding of the cost occured during the agreement period.

Funny how those bolded bullets cover some of the same nuances of employment, eh?

Wouldn't it be amusing if xbox.com falls victim to the media-hyped supposed hack-fest Sunday and ends up serving exploits?

I do agree with you though. It is an amusing hack, but nothin really major. HOWEVER, you have to remember that if/when palladium becomes commonplace (a few iterations down where PCs are like Xboxes), a hack like this WOULD be significant.

Wow, this got a lot of replies in an hour. I have been reading about it for the last hour and I have to say that because this is a software hack, it is probably not safe to bring on to Live. I have no interest in pirating games or thinking I am super 133t by running Linux on the Xbox so of course I will not be hacking my Xbox. Anyway, the funniest thing I found was this link to a thread by these guys. It detailed all their demands from MS when they threatened to release this crack.

And another comment. Xbox Live games are P2P and that is why we are rarely able to get more than 8 players in a game without a ton of lag (MotoGP worked really great though, I guess it was because of how the voice was handled) so people have been complaining about the lack of dedicated servers for a long time. Maybe this will force MS into providing dedicated servers so game can then have more people in them. When Breed comes out (assuming that it is multiplayer), I can't imagine it only having 8 players in it.

People most likely wont be playing pirated games on Live- every time you sign on to live, your xbox is checked to make sure your box is running the MS BIOS (the BIOS your xbox came with). You cannot run pirated software unless the BIOS is altered.... therefore pirated games + more hacking of the xbox != bunch of pirates playing on live.

And even if this hack CAN allow you to play pirated games on LIVE... so what, more people to play with.

edited after i read the entire article

That is the whole point of the hack. No hardware is modified. It is a total software hack. No modchip required.
