He purchased 25% of shares of a company called Pacific Ethanol.

Isn't Ethanol used in gas? Also possibly used in future for hybrid cars or something?

I know Brazil is hugely into ethanol made from sugar cane. I remember seeing a show on Discovery (I think) talking about it, and how they are becoming a world leader in ethanol production and consumption. Very interesting. Maybe Bill saw the same show.

Pacific Ethanol (Research) shares jumped more than 6 percent in morning trade on Nasdaq.

i wonder if the jump had anything to do with the fact that gates bought into it

would be amusing if people drove the price up just because he bought it

Would not surprise me in the least. It happens all the time. If Warren Buffett takes a big position in something, a lot of investors will follow suit as the guy has had so much success. Same thing could have happened here.

Chances are very likely. People like to follow the big whales.

i would call that an emotional response to the high oil prices on his part

the feasibility of ethanol in the US seems to be highly debated.
the anit-ethanol'ers point out that all of the farm equipment used to grow the corn use diesel, so you need something like .75 gallon of diesel to get 1 gallon of ethanol

also when a pro-ethanol'er talks about brazil, it is brought up that they use sugar cane and not corn and have farm equipment that runs on ethanol

i normally buy my gas at a local store that sells 10% ethanol (89 octane) for 1-4 cents less than "regular" unleaded, but i do it just for the price savings

<shrugs>

i don't think sugar cane will grow in nebraska/iowa etc
apparently you don't get as much ethanol from corn as sugar cane

just because brazil can use it, doesn't mean we can

.75 gallon of diesel to 1 gallon of ethanol is a start. Just like Brazil...if ethanol starts becoming a feasible item, ethanol farming equipment will become available. It is short sighted to use the state of farm equipment as the measure of whether ethanol is feasible long term.

If I still owned a vehicle that was capable of burning E85, I'd happily start using it at the local gas stations that provide it (we have a couple around here).

Was not suggesting you could, just pointing it out as a point of interest. It won't grow up here either, it does not mean we should not talk about it, or even look to Brazil for a basic model.

i am just sceptical of these things when we have eleventy billion gallons of crude oil in ANWR waiting to be tapped and a googleplex of equivalent energy in the coal reserves inside the US

Um, renewable resources FTW?

I am no tree hugger, but it seems to make sense to me to develop a plan for renewable energy of some sort. Demand is enormous and constantly growing, so it just seems logical to me. Why dig up a wildlife refuge and displace all kinds of flora and fauna if you do not need to?

If 1000 investors were to suddenly buy 25% of a company, its stock will rise considerably too.
