He gives more money away with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation than really anyone else.

However much people may not like Microsoft - you have to give the guy credit for starting with nothing and making huge amounts of money from a large corporation - and then to give tons of that money away.

Why?

He has done a lot of good for this world.

This $900 million is just one of the many things he has done for people.

I bet if he spent $900million to fix the huge security holes in Windows at a faster pace, society would benefit more.. And somewhere, the people working on cures for tuberculosis would benefit because their Windows boxes would be more secure, more reliable, and their productivity would thus increase.

I am glad he's at least donating his money, though. No one in life should expect to spend all their money on themselves if they are THAT fortunate.

it's inspirational isn't it?

but really... once you hit a certain level of wealth, what more can you possibly attain? when money and riches mean nothing because you have so much, you might as well give to people who need it.

Gates gets two big thumbs up from me.:thumbsup:

He should do a series of lectures for the ultra-rich, showing them how to give back to their communities and charitable organizations.

Yeah, he is an exceptional businessman/entrepreneur what have you, and you're right, I don't like Microsoft. I'm not sayin I don't use their products, I do, I use windows 2000 in fact. I find it makes operating my system much easier than if I just had componnents connected together.

Now, he has done something very positive, and many will benefit from his actions, (along with the millions more that have already benefited from him creating microsoft, and allowing normal people to use a computer).

On the vastly more immature side though, 900million? You're kidding? Microsoft's last quarter profits were around 3.65billion. So with all that they spent, they had another 3.65billion leftover. Once evreyones salaries are paid,ad those hefty executive remunerations, they had 3.65billion left. Now, yes 900million is a huge sum of money to us, and to the people that will gratefully receive it, but still. The dude has so much more money than that. He as so many billions. Him personally. Does he actually need that? Hell does he need more than saaaaaaay, 500million? OK, maybe he does. Maybe he needs one USbillion. I don't think he could really spend a billion on 'stuff for the house' or something, but either way, say he wants 1billion dollars to keep. He could give so much to charity, but instead he opts to keep his ridiculous wealth, that is going to no use, but to make him more money, whereas he could put it to use. If a guy on the street donated $200 to the cause, that would be amazing. For bill gates to donate 900million, to him, is nothing. He drops that much down the couch.

In my opinion, he deserves no more respect as a human being for that donation than if I donated $10.

Whatever you say or think of Gates (and his OS), he is the most philanthropic person on the planet. I saw a listing of philantropists in Businessweek a few years ago and Gates gave more to charities than something like the next 5-6 on the list combined. In comparison, the article showed that Larry Ellison of Oracle gave almost nothing.

EDIT: Here's the list (pdf) from 2004. Above, I might have been remembering the list from 2002 or 2003.

but the differenc is he donates more that that, and most of it never gets noticed. All you haters are ridiculous. I bet no on on this forum even gives more than 10% of their wealth. Lots of must have failed History. Most of the richest men ever dirbursed their wealth after they died.

according to forbes magazine:

"Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, to be sure, has so far contributed 37 percent of his wealth, or over $28 billion, to charitable organizations."

i donate around 12% of my gross income, and i only make 52K gross...i definitely respect bill gates with what he has done with his wealth

ROFL

Yes the company may be up money...but when a company is up money...what do you do? No you don't give it all away. You save it for when things might not go so well. Or you invest it into R&D.

Also currently the Gates Foundation holds about $28 Billion. This I believe is MORE than Bill Gates himself is worth.

Some of the poeple in this thread are absolutely ridiculous. Gates donates so much but donates only to causes where the charity can prove it's going to those who need it. Gates demands accountabilility and justification of overhead before he gives his money away
.
It's not just a dollar amount, it's that he spends so much time evaluating the causes that he donates to.

No I personally haven't donated $10 to the fight against tb. But no-one started a thread saying I'm amazing.

I'm not a hater lol, I respect him for his intelligence and ability to both found microsoft, and his ability to make it into the almost complete dominating monopolistic power that it is. He is a smart guy.

However, I don't think I have to like someone just because they give to charirty? I'm very happy for the benefactors of his many donations, and he has given more as a percentage of his worth than I most probably ever will. If humans were judged entirely on their monetary contributions to others, even if as a percentage of net worth, he is a far, far greater man than I am, and probably better than much of the worlds population. Doesn't mean I have to like him. I don't dislike him, I don't want him dead, I don't want to hurt him, or for something unpleasant to happen to him, I'm grateful to him for all that he has done, both for the human race as a whole, and for those who directly benefit as a result of his many donations to charity. I would not however, say that I like the guy.
