Since when are you requird to carry ID in the United States?

If the police request your ID, you have to show them ... that means you need to have an ID in the first place.
Your reasoning is flawed on a level rivaling that of a Schizophrenic's.

The regulation which compels you to show ID to a law enforcement official is simply whatever specific regulation in that state/county/etc. that requires you to comply with the instructions of a law enforcement official when possible. A police officer cannot instruct you to levitate 3 feet off the ground and then arrest you for not doing so. Similarly a police officer cannot instruct you to show your ID and then arrest you because you don't have it on you. (They can search you for said ID though, and the Supreme Court has agreed that you can be asked for ID for any -- or no -- reason and still be required to show it if you have it) If there is some suspicion of a crime -- like breaking and entering, disturbing the peace, etc. -- then you can be detained until a positive identification has been made. But arresting you for not carrying ID is a myth, an extremist version of the boogyman meant to encourage the stupid and uninformed to hate law enforcement officials even more.

What if you're driving a car? Then if asked, you're required to show your license.

Driving a car in this country requires a license. Living in this country does not require I.D.

A few years ago, I was on the road with my father and a friend, with the friend driving. We were stopped for holding up traffic (the vehicle was on it's last leg, couldn't do 20MPH in a 35MPH zone). The cop asked to see my friend's ID (since he was driving, and had an intermediate license, then he had to show it of course), and then my DAD'S ID. That kind of pissed my dad off, because there's no reason a passenger should have to show ID. After 1.5 hours of arguing, and numerous threats to "haul him in", my dad finally showed his ID, but he was still pretty pissed off about the whole incident. At the time, I didn't think much of it, but now I realize how ****ed up that was, and what other regimes we're following in the footsteps of
