LONDON (Reuters) - A British cyclist who slashed almost 2,000 tires after a driver drenched him when driving through a puddle was sentenced to 16 months in prison Friday.

Ashley Carpenter, 37, used a sharpened screwdriver to puncture the tires of 548 parked cars, trucks and vans over a 10-day period in revenge for the "inconsiderate manner" of motorists.

Carpenter told police he began his campaign after one car nearly knocked him down and another drove through a puddle and drenched him.

I'll grant that cyclists can get problems from people driving cars, but I've seen cyclists do some really stupid and inconsiderate things too. I can't count the number of cyclists I've seen who run stop signs (they don't even slow down). I've seen cyclists go straight from the right-hand side of a right-turn-only lane (if that's not an invitation to have a car run you over, I don't know what is), I've seen them make left turns from the right lane (see my previous parenthetical comment), they generally just disregard all lane regulations and traffic signals. I have no problem treating bicycles as vehicles and giving them all the room of a car, but I really wish they would obey the traffic laws.

He should have just bought an SUV and slowly used up all the world's oil reserves all the while poluting the very air that these drivers breathe to survive. Or I guess slashing the tires was ok too.

booooooooo... looks like everyone hates cyclists...

I don't hate them, but I think that they are hazards on the road in most cases. For example, I can't stand it when a cyclist is backing traffic up during rush hour on a busy road.

Personally, I only hate the ones who attempt to showboat on the highway. Wheelies, 120 mph passes, stuff like that. Oh, I also hate the ones who slash 2,000 tires.

No, there are plenty of considerate ones who know what to do when there's a stop sign (i.e. stop). I just get pissed because it seems as though the majority of cyclists just plain openly flaunt traffic laws. I know that's likely just selective memory and I only remember the idiot cyclists, but it's not as though everyone on a cycle is this wonderfully considerate person.

And just to point out, I have no problem with cyclists doing things like walking their bike across a cross-walk (I know that if they're walking the bike, they're a pedestrian) I just wish that they wouldn't do things that seem actively designed to make life hard on other drivers. To all you good cyclists out there (and I know that there are many on this board), I'm sorry that you guys have to deal with the ill-will generated by the few idiots who get remembered.

I could be wrong, but I had the impression this was a BICYCLIST.
