I was told "bike shorts" are great for preventing chafing when on long bike rides, running etc. Where do you get these?

baseball sliding shorts work too...and depending on the bike shop locations near you, may be easier to find...as it is baseball season. :)

any sporting goods store will carry sliding shorts.

Online? Bike Nashbar or Performance.

Local? Either check out a Performance shop, or try and find a local bike shop in the area. You may pay more, but most people in a LBS actually know what they are talking about.

Do you want bike shorts or running shorts? Would be stupid to run in bike shorts with gel padding and so on.
If you want to prevent chafing for exercise, get any synthetic boxer brief. You can get C9 boxer brief at Target for $12, that does the job well.
If you want to bike, go to a bike shop and get padded bike shorts. It will probably be closer to $30 for those. And wear them over the boxer brief mentioned before.

Thatnks, are those similar to the Under Armor underwear? And I see JC Penny sells some Jockey knock off's as well.

Half the stuff in clothing is made by the same group of people. My dad told me about this one time he was helping to audit this one clothing distributor. They had these white robes that they sewn Sears labels on and sold for $30. Those same robes also had "Sax Fifth Ave" labels sewn on sometimes, and those sold for $80.

They sell them at my local bike shop, but they're too expensive there. I bought a pair from Dick's Sporting Goods and they're decent.

do you want them for riding, or running? for riding, check the positioning of your saddle, or buy a new saddle, or apply butt cream ("butt butter"). for running, you dont need padding of bike shorts -just apply the butt butter. my runner coworker said theres a version made for runners (probably just fancy vaseline)
