The brake on my son's bike stopped working. I found it's missing the collet or collar or whatever its called that allows the brake cable housing to screw into the lever housing.

What's this piece called? I need to look it up on amazon so I can get an assortment and fix his bike.

dunno what its called but should be an easy fix. Canadian tire probably sells that piece for under 10 bucks. cheap bikes these days use plastic on various components that actually receive stress. Make sure you replace it with something that is sturdier.

local bike shop fixed it and adjusted the brakes for $3.50. I bought some chain lube while I was there and promptly left it sitting on the counter.

What's a "local bike shop"? Does Amazon sell them?

^ local bike shops are great. Almost always, you can establish a good rapport with the guys in there and get parts for way cheaper than off any website i've ever seen. Selection can be limiting though, and its a bit odd to buy expensive stuff in store these days I find since I'm so used to buying stuff online, but generally speaking LBS are one of the few places I'd rather buy from than online.

meh I don't think a lot of LBS's can compete with online vendors pricing in varying cases. I wanted to upgrade my Jamis Coda Elite hybrid to nice hydraulic disc brakes and settled on Deore XT's. Spoke to my 2 LBS's which are both great and talked pricing and they pretty much said to order the brakes myself and then they would install them for a labor fee. They just couldn't compete price wise. I think each XT brake was like $85. So that's how it went down. Did the same thing for a seatpost and pedals. Ordered them myself.

I did mix it up earlier this year though. Went to my 2 LBS's to discuss converting my 3x9 gear setup to a 1x9 setup. I wanted a 48T front chainring and the only 48T narrow wide front chainring was a 4 bolt so I had to get a new crankset since mine was 5. One LBS happened to have a nice crankset in stock they wanted to get rid of, gave me a nice price for that, ordered the chainring - so I bought everything for that conversion through them.

An LBS can't compete on prices, but I bet if the OP walked into just about any decent bike shop, they would have given him the adjuster free or real cheap.

Could be different in Canada I guess. At least in my experience, LBS is cheaper every time, by a lot.

I have a 2010 which I bought used last year during early summer. Now I've tweaked it out quite a bit. New wheels are next.

It's a great ride right? Jamis makes nice steel frames that absorb a lot of the little bumps and chitter chatter from the road.

I'd like to pick up a used Jamis Quest to use as a townie if I could find one locally. Missed out on one this summer. I'd put flat bars on it, a rack, convert it to a 1x10 or 1x11. Several bikes could fill that bill, if I can locate one. Salsa Casseroll, Soma ES are couple of others I've been looking for.
