Bike Racks and other Cycling questions

Modeps

I've got a crown vic and was looking to get a bike rack. I'm just curious if there's anything wrong with getting a "cheap" one (like this) $40 aint bad... Do they just more expensive for how many bikes they can hold or does quality increase as well?

I used to work at a bike shop (long time ago) and the trunk racks sucked royally, if you can afford it, get a roof rack, look around on eBay & see if you can scrounge a used one...

I honestly dont know if I do, I'm just starting up again with my older bike! 🙂 While we're at it... what do I need to get for LONG distance riding? Should I get a pair of padded shorts or gloves? I know I need a helmet already and a squeeze water bottle... Extra tubes perhaps and a hand pump?

The Saris Bones racks were supposed to be good, but I don't know if they actually were or if I got tricked by marketing. IIRC, they're quite pricey for trunk racks. I would go with the in-trunk method if it fits.

Gloves, patch kit/tubes, pump, definitely. I'd also get a basic multi-tool. 1/2 finger gloves with lycra backs and a leatherette palm are pretty comfortable and cool. I would hold off on the shorts until you figure out if you need them. They're a big improvement, but you might not ride long enough to care.

If you have a bike w/o a top bar, some racks don't work. They sell adapters that clamp between the seatpost and handlebars to make a horizontal bar, etc.

As for roof racks, if you get one of those, measure the height and be aware of your 'clearance' as I've heard horror stories of folks who forgot the bike was up there.

You can also go with a trailer hitch -> bike rack. But as others suggested, best bet would be to get it in the vehicle if possible.

see www.mtbr.com they probably have reviews of various models.
