I picked up my Jamis Allegro 1 today. It is supposed to 24 speed, but when i dropped it off at home this morning, it only had 1 gear the front (where you pedal) as opposed to 3. i do not want to go back b/c his hours are just 8-5 on weekdays....it is kind of a hassle. Also, I got this bike $200 less (paid $420) than everywhere else, so maybe that is the reason why it was cheaper. SHould i find time to raise hell, or should i just go away into the night and just add the stuff myself? Is this a cheap install and easy?

you have a single chainring. you wanted a triple? there's really no need for a triple unless it's a mountain bike, you live in Colorado or you'll be hauling a lot of stuff. Otherwise I would keep the single. Double if you want to race. If you really want to, they are fairly easy to change out.

Not really that easy. He'd have to get all the shifter hardware and cable too. I'd be taking it back and straightening it out with the seller. maybe you looked at a 24 speed and then got the price for the 8.

yeah, it was supposed to come with it.... he was really nice too...he ate the shipping cost b/c he had to special order it since he did not have my size in stock. They guy is a mom and pop store and he is busy as hell because he is a one man business, but his prices are usually 30% cheaper. Place is kind of a hidden gem.

But, it is not that big of a deal....I do not use those gears, but if it's cheap , I'll install it myself.

hmmm....maybe....is there something that says 8 speed or 24 speed somewhere? I always though that one set had 8 or 7, while the other set has 3.

Agree with others that it's probably not needed, but, if it was supposed to be there I'd go back and ask for it as well. If the shop is reputable they'll take care of you.

and cable and shifter on the handlebars? heck get him to ship you a proper chainring set and you're golden!
EDIT: Might need to adjust the length of chain too.

yeah...it's all there. It just has the single cog (is that what it is called?) where the pedal is. It has the front and back derailleur, as well as front and back shifters.

It has a front derailleur but only one chainring? WTF? Can we get some pics?

Yeah, I'd take it back for sure.

You will need a double or triple up front if you will climb hills and are not an avid cyclist. Granny gear exists for a reason.

Further, it is somewhat costly to buy chainrings and install them. Your chain might have to be replaced as well.

Is this the bike you bought?

Looks like it has a double crankset. Are you sure it doesn't have an inner chainring? I can't imagine any knowledgeable bike mechanic assembling a bike and not noticing that it was missing a chainring. Part of final assembly is running it through all the gears to make sure it shifts properly. I also can't believe they told you it was a 24 speed since it appears that that bike is sold with a compact double crankset and 8 spd cassette which would make it a 16 speed bike.

Honestly, after they make it right (assuming it really is missing a chainring) I'd take it somewhere else and have them go over it to make sure everything is working properly.

Nice hybrid BTW. I've been thinking of picking one up myself and that one might be a good choice.

Edit-I see they also sell an Allegro 1X which has a triple. Either way, if there is only one chainring on the bike someone screwed up. Take it back.

Is this a new bike or a used bike?

I read 24 speed somewhere (he didn't tell me), but I just thought it was odd that there was a derailluer with only one chain ring. Is the big black one on the outer half supposed to be a chain ring? I only know so much about bikes. I didn't realize until I got home. I was gonna go back, but I really had to get to work.

I've built up bikes before and the cranksets always come with all the chainrings already mounted on the crankset. I can't imagine any competent mechanic would assemble a bike and not notice that it was missing a chainring.
