How long is "an extended period of time" ? I wore mine for about 40 minutes in the store before I settled on it.

It gets really uncomfortable after a couple hours...slightly uncomfortable after 45min to an hour, I'd guess.
 
Well hopefully you have better luck with the Shoei. I have a medium RF1000 and find it quite comfortable, but everyone's head is different.
