My mother's wanting to upgrade my dad's TV. They currently have a 65" Mitsubishi RPCRT HDTV. She wants to get a 60+ plasma or LCD (non-projection) that can be wall-mounted.

Got any suggestions on what to look for? Brands, models?

Whats the price range?
Panasonic plasmas are really nice with (IIRC) Pioneer being better but more expensive
I have a soft spot for Samsung LCDs. IMO if you are looking for an LCD they give you the best bang for your buck

 
I second the Panny's, about to get the 50" Plasma myself, the price on them is pretty awsome, I couldn't afford a 60"+ model, and don't even have room for it. You can't go wrong with Panny, the Pioneer is super sick, but so is the price tag 😀


I just googled the Panny WOW 60"'s are A LOT more than the 50"'s holy shit I'm glad I don't have room for one now.
 
My brother loves his 61" Samsung DLP, I'm quite happy with my 50".

A 1080p 61" Samsung sells for ~$1,600, less with a hot deal.

I like the DLP idea myself, but mounting those on a wall can be tricky. Does it _really_ need to be wall mounted?
 
60+ is the money zone for plasma and LCD. DLP are pretty dang cheap even up to 73", but like I said, plasmas and especially LCDs get pretty expensive, fast, at that range.

Here are the top options:

1. 60" Pioneer Elite 150FD = $7500 MSRP

2. 60" Pioneer 6010FD = ~$4500-$4800 online

3. 65" Panasonic TH-65PZ750U = ~$6500 online

4. 65" Sharp LC-65SE94U = ~$9000-$10,000 (I'm not big on Sharp though)

5. 70" Sony KDL-70XBR3 = $33,000 MSRP :Q

At a $2500 price point there are few options at that size. They'll also be limited to a 720p display.

There's the 60" LG Plasma - 60PC1D that runs right @ $2500 online, if you can find one. I installed one for my wife's aunt and uncle not long ago. You can see the thread about it here.

There's also the 58" Panasonic TH-58PE75U that you can pick up from Costco for $1999. Great deal for a nice TV.

Both TVs above have great pictures in HD. In SD they're not so great, but few TVs of that size can make a low res signal look good anyway.

If your parents want 1080p at that size the budget will need to increase a bit. Quite a bit.

:thumbsup: Or wait till the prices come down. On a positive note I believe that Panasonic is changing over to their new line so you might be able to find some clearance sets in your price range (IIRC they are going from TH-xxxx75x to TH-xxxx85u)

Did you not want rear projection due to depth? Would a flat wall mounted blank screen for front projection in that room?

(You'll be able to get 1080p and much more than 60" on your budget 😉 )
 
Samsung's 61" HL-T6176S DLP is less than a foot deep, the LED HT-T6187S a bit more. Both are well under your budget.

Front projection could be sweet, though. 😀
