Whats the biggest estiamted hard drive size on a old pc with the specs of p2 233mhz and had the daughter board with the isa and pci. Right now my friend pc has only a 4gb and hes thinking about getting a 40gb and i rember on my p2 350mhz my 20gb worked fine so would a 40gb work on a older pc.

The last 3 size limits were 8 GB, 32 GB, 137 GB IIRC. For a 233 it's most likely 32 GB, but you might be able to flash the BIOS to raise the limit to 137 GB.

Yep, even though it's a 233 a BIOS flash should fix you up to 137GB... What chipset?

Most LX boards can be flashed to 137GB. The LX had the same IDE controller as the BX boards and all of them go to 137GB.

im gussing its the Lx C.S. board. I put windows 2000 on there i had a dec. between xp or 2k3 or 2000. He needs a new os b/c the cable guy came today and said he couldnt install cable modem on windows 95.. so i had to put 2000 and it runs pretty fast and better than xp on a p2 233 and 128mb ram.

<edit>To be somewhat on topic, yeah, probably a 137GB limit is what you'll find.</edit>

Most motherboards makers quit updating their bios's on those older lx/bx boards. So usually their last bios gets you 40 gig.

Ok you stated that LX can work with 120 gig drives quite interesting that my MSI 5169 can't recognize a 40gig drive in the bios.

I heard today something of a new bios flash that makes it possible to read bigger drives but I'm not sure for what boards or not... I would love to run my 40 gig as master on my k6-3 400 but it won't boot because of the bios not seeing it.

The MSI 5169 is not based on the LX chipset. It's based on the Ali Alladin V chipset.

Worst case, you could pick up a controller card, then you wouldn't have to worry about the onboard IDE limitations.
